Château Latour is one of Bordeaux's most revered names, a First Growth in Pauillac that sets the standard for power, structure and longevity. These reds are built to age for decades, yet the estate now releases them only when they are ready to drink, so a bottle from us is ready to open now.
History and terroir: the walled vines of L'Enclos
Latour was classified a First Growth in 1855. The heart of the estate is L'Enclos, the walled plot of around 47 hectares that wraps around the château on a gravel rise beside the Gironde. The river cools the vines and holds off frost, so the grapes ripen slowly and keep their freshness, and many in Bordeaux rate this the finest terroir on the Left Bank. The grand vin comes from these vines alone. Certified organic since 2018, Latour belongs to François Pinault's Artémis Domaines.
Style, and the wines of Latour
Latour is Cabernet Sauvignon at its most serious, the grand vin well over 90% Cabernet with a little Merlot. Expect blackcurrant, cedar and graphite over a firm, savoury frame that softens with age into tobacco, leather and truffle. Below it sit two more wines: the second, Les Forts de Latour, and a third labelled Pauillac de Latour, both readier to drink at a gentler price. Since the 2012 vintage the estate has left the en primeur system, holding each wine back until it feels mature. If this style appeals, explore the wider world of Bordeaux, our range of Cabernet Sauvignon and more classic red wine.
Château Latour FAQ
When should I drink Château Latour?
The estate releases its wines only as they approach maturity, so the vintages you find are ready to enjoy, and the best keep improving for years.
What food pairs with Latour?
Roast lamb, beef tenderloin, ribeye and game. The firm tannins and acidity cut through rich, fatty dishes, and mature bottles love mushrooms and truffles.
What are Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour?
They are the estate's second and third wines, made from younger vines and declassified lots. Both carry the house Pauillac character in a more approachable, earlier-drinking form.
