Description
Château Latour 2001 is one of Pauillac’s most iconic and reliable great wines, combining power, precision, and remarkable depth. Drawn from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, it offers the pedigree of a First Growth with a style that is already surprisingly expressive while still built for long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep inky ruby-purple colour that still holds beautifully at the rim. The nose is classic Latour: blackcurrant, crushed stones, vanilla, truffle, and well-judged oak, unfolding with impressive purity and complexity.
The palate is full-bodied and layered, with a refined sweetness of fruit, firm but beautifully integrated tannins, bright acidity, and a polished, expansive texture. It has the structure and concentration expected of Latour, yet the 2001 vintage is more open-knit than some of the more monumental releases, making it accessible now while still offering serious aging potential of 20 years or more.
Production
Château Latour’s vineyards lie on exceptional Pauillac terroir, where deep gravel and clay soils, topped with large rounded stones, store heat and help the grapes ripen evenly. The estate’s plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the farming has since 2015 been fully organic, with horses used for ploughing and natural fertilisation.
Food & Serving
This is a wine that deserves equally refined food: roast lamb, beef filet, game, truffle dishes, or mature hard cheeses are all excellent matches. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening now, especially to let its layered aromatics and tannins fully emerge.
Producer
Château Latour is one of Bordeaux’s most storied estates, with roots reaching back to the 14th century and the original tower that gave the property its name. Classed as a Premier Cru in 1855, it remains one of the benchmark names of the Médoc, and since 1993 it has been owned by François Pinault, who has continued to invest heavily in the estate’s quality and sustainable viticulture.
