Description
Veuve Fourny Champagne Cuvée R Vertus 1er Cru Extra Brut is a pure Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs crafted from premier cru vineyards in the village of Vertus. Named “R” in honor of Roger, one of the estate’s founding figures, this cuvée is a tribute to traditional craftsmanship and long, patient aging. Exclusively vinified in small oak barrels and matured for four years in the chalk cellars, it offers an opulent yet finely etched expression of Côte des Blancs terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Cuvée R shows a luminous, pale gold color with fine, persistent bubbles that form a delicate, creamy mousse. The nose is complex and layered, with aromas of ripe citrus, baked apple, and pear interwoven with notes of toasted brioche, acacia blossom, vanilla pod, and a subtle hint of hazelnut from barrel aging.
On the palate, this Extra Brut is both generous and precise. The texture is silky and mouth-filling, with flavors of lemon curd, yellow orchard fruits, and white peach supported by nuances of buttered toast, light spice, and chalky minerality. The low dosage allows the terroir and the wine’s natural richness to shine, finishing long, dry, and saline with great finesse. With its structure and depth, this cuvée will continue to evolve beautifully for several years, gaining even more complexity and tertiary notes with careful cellaring.
Production
Sourced from premier cru vineyards around Vertus in the Champagne region of France, Cuvée R is a pure Chardonnay expression rooted in chalky, mineral-rich soils that give the wine its tension and finesse. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. The must is then vinified exclusively in small oak barrels, following Veuve Fourny’s old-fashioned, artisanal approach, which brings subtle oak nuance and added texture without overwhelming the fruit. After bottling, the wine is aged for a full four years in the estate’s cool cellars on its lees, building complexity, creaminess, and fine, persistent bubbles before disgorgement and a very low Extra Brut dosage.
Food & Serving
This is a true gastronomic Champagne, ideal for elevated dishes and refined ingredients. Its depth and minerality make it a remarkable match for white truffle dishes—think truffle risotto, buttered tagliatelle with shaved white truffle, or truffle-infused poultry. It also pairs beautifully with mature soft cheeses such as Brie de Meaux, Chaource, or a well-ripened Camembert, where the wine’s acidity cuts through the creaminess. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the full aromatic spectrum to unfold. A brief 10–15 minutes in a carafe or simply letting it open in the glass enhances its complexity, especially when served with richer cuisine.
