Vega Sicilia doesn't bottle Único every year. In vintages the estate judges below its own standard, the fruit goes into Valbuena instead, or isn't released under either label at all, a discipline the property has held to since the nineteenth century.
Único and Valbuena
Único is the flagship: mostly Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo) with a small share of Cabernet Sauvignon, aged around a decade across large and small oak before release, in a style closer to old Rioja Gran Reserva than to modern Ribera del Duero. Valbuena 5° sits below it: near-pure Tinto Fino, five years in barrel and bottle, made most years and drinking sooner, though it's serious wine in its own right rather than a simple second label.
One family since 1982
Industrialist David Álvarez bought the estate in 1982, reportedly while brokering its sale to someone else, and kept it instead. His son Pablo has run Vega Sicilia since the mid-1980s, and the family's approach (low yields, long ageing, patience over volume) hasn't changed under his direction.
Macán: the Rioja project
Vega Sicilia partnered with Benjamin de Rothschild to plant vineyards in Rioja Alavesa, releasing the first Macán vintage in 2009. It draws on limestone and clay soils at altitude and shows a leaner, more structured style than most Rioja, built on the same long-game philosophy that defines Único.

Why doesn't Vega Sicilia make Único every year?
The estate only releases it in vintages it considers strong enough. Weaker years become Valbuena or are declassified entirely, which is part of why Único carries the reputation it does.
