Vega Sicilia Reserva Especial Release 2022 is one of Spain’s most prestigious red wines, combining the character of the 2008, 2010 and 2011 vintages rather than representing a single harvest. Made predominantly from Tempranillo, it is renowned for its remarkable depth, complexity and ability to develop gracefully over decades—a style that has helped establish Vega Sicilia as one of the defining names of Spanish wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this mature red shows a deep ruby to garnet colour, often with brick-toned reflections from extended bottle age. The bouquet is layered and sophisticated, offering ripe dark fruit, dried plum and black cherry alongside cedar, tobacco, leather, spice and subtle earthy notes. With time in the glass, additional nuances of dried herbs, cocoa and balsamic complexity may emerge. The palate is full-bodied yet finely balanced, combining concentrated fruit with polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Its blend of vintages contributes both maturity and depth, with the 2008, 2010 and 2011 harvests bringing different dimensions to the final wine. It is ready to enjoy now, but should continue to evolve in a well-stored cellar for many years.

Production
The wine originates from Vega Sicilia’s estate vineyards in Castilla y León, where the continental climate, marked seasonal variation and relatively dry conditions help Tempranillo develop concentration while retaining freshness. The fruit is carefully selected and traditionally vinified, followed by prolonged maturation in oak and bottle. The Reserva Especial is notable for its multi-vintage composition, allowing the estate to create a consistent yet highly complex expression by blending carefully chosen wines from different harvests.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to serving temperature. Decanting for around one to two hours is recommended, both to separate any sediment and to allow the wine’s layered aromas to open; older bottles should be handled gently and tasted periodically during decanting. Its structure and savoury complexity pair beautifully with roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, game, Iberian cured meats and mature hard cheeses.
