Description
Weingut Georg Breuer Riesling Terra Montosa 2022 is a precise, dry Rheingau Riesling sourced from some of the estate’s steepest and most highly regarded hillside vineyards. Named after the “bergiges Land” (mountainous land) from which it comes, this cuvée is effectively a ‘mini Grosses Gewächs’, blending fruit from second-selection parcels in Breuer’s top sites. For more than three decades, Terra Montosa has been a benchmark for classically structured, terroir-driven Rheingau Riesling, often outshining wines officially bottled under grander designations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Terra Montosa shows a bright, pale straw-yellow hue with greenish reflections, hinting at its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is expressive and finely etched, with aromas of yellow stone fruits (ripe peach, mirabelle plum), juicy citrus zest, and accents of white blossoms. Subtle notes of crushed slate, wet stone, and a touch of dried herbs lend a distinctly mineral and savory edge, echoing the diverse, rocky soils of its steep origins.
On the palate, this Riesling is dry, focused, and elegantly structured, balancing ripe fruit intensity with a racy, mouthwatering acidity. Layers of lemon and lime, apricot, and green apple are intertwined with saline minerality and a hint of smoky, slate-driven spice. The finish is long, linear, and precise, with a lingering citrus and herbal lift that invites another sip. While delicious in its youth, the 2022 has the backbone and acidity to develop further complexity over the next 8–12 years, gaining more honeyed and tertiary nuances with time in the bottle.
Production
Terra Montosa is drawn from some of Georg Breuer’s steepest and most characterful sites in Rüdesheim (Berg Roseneck, Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland), Rauenthal (Nonnenberg), and Lorch (Pfaffenwies). These vineyards are marked by demanding inclines and a mosaic of soils dominated by clay, phyllite, and quartzite slate, which combine to give the wine its tension, depth, and mineral finesse. The grapes selected for Terra Montosa come from the second-best parcels within these grand vineyards—fruit that is carefully hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and pristine quality. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and large traditional wooden casks, at controlled temperatures that preserve aromatic clarity and site expression. The wine is then matured on its fine lees, enhancing texture and complexity while maintaining the crisp, linear profile that defines Georg Breuer’s house style.
Food & Serving
This Rheingau Riesling is exceptionally versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with delicately flavored yet refined dishes. Think sashimi and ceviche, freshwater fish with citrus or herb butter, shellfish such as scallops or prawns, and lightly spiced Asian cuisine—particularly dishes with ginger, lemongrass, or a gentle chili heat. It also complements white asparagus, summer salads with citrus vinaigrettes, and soft goat cheeses. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10 °C to highlight its precision and freshness. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open aromatically, especially in its first few years, but is not strictly necessary—swirling in a medium-sized white wine glass will also allow the layers of fruit and minerality to unfold.
Producer
Weingut Georg Breuer, based in Rüdesheim in the Rheingau, is one of Germany’s most respected Riesling specialists and a key figure in the renaissance of dry German wines. Founded in the late 19th century and shaped decisively by the visionary Bernhard Breuer in the late 20th century, the estate has long championed terroir expression, low yields, and an uncompromisingly dry style. With holdings in some of the Rheingau’s finest steep vineyards—such as Berg Schlossberg, Berg Roseneck, and Nonnenberg—Georg Breuer has played a leading role in defining what top-class, site-specific Rheingau Riesling can be. The winery is widely recognized by critics and collectors for its age-worthy Grosses Gewächs and single-vineyard bottlings, and Terra Montosa has become a reference cuvée that offers a remarkably accessible window into this elite vineyard portfolio.
