Description

Domaine Leflaive’s Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 2009 is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the appellation’s most distinguished Premier Cru vineyards. Made from Chardonnay, it combines the richness and precision of the celebrated 2009 vintage with Puligny-Montrachet’s signature mineral elegance. Les Folatières is renowned for producing wines with depth and complexity that can approach Grand Cru quality, making this a particularly compelling example of the domaine’s style.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a luminous golden hue, reflecting both its maturity and the richness of the vintage. Its expressive nose opens with citrus, white flowers, ripe pear and subtle toast, followed by layers of honey, hazelnut and flinty minerality as it evolves in the glass. On the palate, lemon and green apple are complemented by a creamy texture with notes of butter, vanilla and toasted almond. Precise acidity provides energy and balance, while a long, refined finish reveals saline minerality and chalky undertones. This is a beautifully composed Premier Cru with both immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential. It can be enjoyed now for its combination of freshness, texture and developing tertiary character, or kept for approximately another 10–15 years under ideal storage conditions, when deeper notes of honey, roasted nuts and dried citrus may emerge.

Production
Les Folatières occupies a highly regarded position in Puligny-Montrachet, where limestone-rich soils help give the wines their characteristic tension, chalky texture and mineral drive. Domaine Leflaive is known for its careful vineyard work and commitment to biodynamic principles, with grapes harvested by hand when fully ripe while preserving freshness. The Chardonnay is traditionally fermented and matured in oak, allowing the wine to develop its creamy texture and restrained toasted character without obscuring the purity of the fruit or the expression of the terroir.

Food & Serving
A versatile and sophisticated match for fine seafood and richly textured dishes, this wine is particularly well suited to lobster, crab, scallops, sole meunière, roast poultry and truffle risotto. Serve lightly chilled at around 11–13°C. Decanting is not essential, but a gentle decant or 20–30 minutes in a broad glass can help the wine reveal its floral, nutty and mineral complexity.

Producer
Founded in 1926, Domaine Leflaive has become one of Burgundy’s most respected producers and one of the defining names of Puligny-Montrachet. The domaine’s wines are celebrated for their purity, finesse, longevity and precise articulation of vineyard character. Its long-standing commitment to biodynamic farming has further strengthened its reputation as a leading domaine in the Côte de Beaune, with its Premier Cru and Grand Cru bottlings regarded among the region’s most sought-after white Burgundies.
