Louis Roederer is one of Champagne's great family houses, prized for wines of real precision and a vinous, food-friendly depth that sets them apart. It has stayed independent since the 18th century and grows most of its own fruit, which is rare in a region built on bought-in grapes. The result is Champagne with a clear sense of place, generous but always taut.
A family Champagne house rooted in its own vineyards
The house was founded in Reims in 1776 and took the Roederer name in 1833, when Louis Roederer began buying up the finest chalk terroirs rather than relying on merchants. That instinct still defines the estate. It farms around 240 hectares across the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs, and is now the largest biodynamic grower in Champagne. Careful vineyard work and low yields give the wines their concentration and mineral spine, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay leading the blends. Cristal, the Collection cuvée and the estate range
The everyday shop window is the Collection, a multi-vintage blend built on a reserve of older wines that replaced Brut Premier in 2022. Above it sit vintage Brut, Blanc de Blancs, an elegant rosé and the bone-dry Brut Nature. At the summit is Cristal, created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II and widely called the first prestige cuvée. Its clear, flat-bottomed bottle began as a security request from the imperial court and became its signature. Cristal is made only in the best years from the estate's oldest biodynamic parcels. Louis Roederer FAQ
What does Louis Roederer Champagne taste like?
Expect a precise, vinous style: green apple and citrus, white flowers and stone fruit, with a fine, creamy mousse and a chalky, saline finish. Older cuvées add brioche, toast and hazelnut.
What food pairs with Louis Roederer?
The house style loves oysters, shellfish, sushi and smoked salmon. Richer vintage and Cristal bottlings handle lobster, roast poultry and truffled dishes, while the rosé suits duck, tuna and charcuterie.
What is Cristal, and why is it special?
Cristal is Roederer's prestige cuvée, first made for the Russian tsar in 1876. It comes only from top vineyards in the best vintages, spends years on its lees and can cellar for a decade or more.
