Description

Pavie Macquin 2009 is a powerful and seductive red from one of Saint-Émilion’s most respected Grand Cru Classé estates. From the outstanding 2009 Bordeaux vintage, this wine showcases both depth and opulence, with a richly layered profile that has evolved beautifully in bottle. It’s a collector-worthy right-bank Bordeaux that captures the sensual side of Merlot-based blends while retaining classic structure and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pavie Macquin 2009 reveals a deep garnet core with slight brick nuances at the rim, reflecting its graceful maturity. The nose is intensely expressive, offering an exotic mix of Chinese five-spice, hoisin, and sweet baking spices alongside baked blackberry, ripe plum, and prune. Subtle hints of licorice, grilled charcoal, and a touch of floral perfume add further complexity. On the palate, this is full-bodied and lavish, with a velvety, almost plush texture that coats the mouth. Layers of baked dark berries, compote-like black fruits, and warm spice roll across the palate, supported by ripe, polished tannins and well-integrated acidity. The finish is long, perfumed, and slightly exotic, echoing notes of spice, dark fruit, and savory richness. At this stage, the 2009 is in a beautiful drinking window, with enough structure and concentration to continue evolving for several more years, though it is already showing excellent tertiary nuance.

Production
Château Pavie Macquin is situated on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where clay-limestone soils and excellent drainage naturally favor Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The vineyard is typically planted predominantly to Merlot, with supporting proportions of Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, all tended with meticulous parcel-by-parcel attention and low yields to maximize concentration. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted before vinification. Fermentation generally takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to capture richness, color, and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant portion new), where it gains additional structure, spice, and complexity before bottling.

Food & Serving
Pavie Macquin 2009 is a superb partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, beef ribeye, duck with a red wine reduction, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given its depth and maturity, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and for any sediment to settle.

Producer
Château Pavie Macquin takes its name from Albert Macquin, the 19th-century agricultural visionary who helped save Bordeaux’s vineyards from the phylloxera crisis by pioneering the use of grafted vines. Located on the prized plateau of Saint-Émilion, the estate is classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé and is widely regarded as one of the appellation’s reference points for powerful yet terroir-driven wines. Under modern, quality-focused stewardship, Pavie Macquin has earned a reputation for producing deeply structured, age-worthy wines that consistently attract critical acclaim and highlight the unique limestone character of this corner of Bordeaux.
