Description

Château Latour 2000 Magnum is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates, offering the kind of power, precision, and longevity collectors seek out. In magnum format, this already monumental vintage develops even more slowly and gracefully, making it a standout bottle for a special cellar or occasion. With roots tracing back to the 14th century and a place among the elite of the 1855 classification, Latour carries serious historical weight as well as world-class pedigree.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château Latour 2000 shows deep, dense color and the unmistakable concentration of a great Left Bank wine. The nose is layered and highly expressive, with ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and dark spice, gradually opening to more subtle notes of earth, cigar box, and polished oak. The palate is powerful yet impeccably composed, with sweet, ripe tannins, remarkable depth, and a long, resonant finish. Robert Parker described the wine as having extraordinary purity and “phenomenally ripe” black fruit, and that intensity is backed by enough structure and freshness to support very long aging. In magnum, it has exceptional cellaring potential and should continue evolving for decades.

Production
Château Latour is farmed on 78 hectares of exceptional Pauillac terroir, where deep gravel soils mixed with clay and large round stones retain and radiate heat well into the evening. The vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot contributing depth and complexity. The estate’s grand vin is selected with great precision, and the 2000 vintage was produced from low yields and only the best parcels of old vines, reflecting a meticulous approach to quality. In recent years, the estate has embraced a more environmentally conscious philosophy, and since 2015 the entire vineyard has been organically farmed. Horses are used for plowing in parts of the vineyard, supporting a more natural balance between the vines, the soil, and the surrounding ecosystem.

Food & Serving
This is a wine best reserved for rich, classic dishes such as beef fillet, roast lamb, venison, duck breast, or truffle-based preparations. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant well in advance if opening now; a younger decanting window of 2–4 hours is sensible, though very old bottles should be handled more cautiously.

Producer
Château Latour is one of Bordeaux’s most legendary estates, with origins dating back to the 1300s when the original tower gave the property its name. It was ranked as a Premier Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification, securing its place among the most important wine estates in the Médoc. Since 1993, it has been owned by François Pinault, and the estate continues to be celebrated for producing some of the most powerful, long-lived, and prestigious wines in France.
