Description

Les Forts de Latour is the celebrated second wine of Château Latour, one of Pauillac’s most iconic estates and a name synonymous with power, longevity, and precision. The 1990 vintage is especially noteworthy, with an unusually high share of fruit usually reserved for the Grand Vin, giving this double magnum exceptional depth and pedigree.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a classic mature Bordeaux character with a deep garnet core and evolving brick-red hues at the rim. The bouquet is complex and layered, opening with blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, and graphite, followed by darker notes of plum, truffle, and warm earth. On the palate, the wine is round and generous, yet firmly structured, with ripe tannins and a fresh, vibrant core that keeps the fruit alive. Robert Parker described the 1990 as rich, well-endowed, and surprisingly concentrated, and it should continue to offer pleasure in a graceful drinking window thanks to the stability and slow evolution that a double magnum provides.

Production
Les Forts de Latour comes from the historic Château Latour estate overlooking the Gironde in Pauillac, where vines grow on deeply gravelly soils mixed with clay and topped by large rounded stones that retain heat well into the evening. The blend is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and in 1990 more than half of the crop normally destined for the Grand Vin was instead used here, reflecting the exceptional quality of the vintage. Harvesting is carried out with careful selection, and vinification follows Château Latour’s meticulous approach, with a focus on preserving structure, purity, and balance. In recent years the estate has moved fully to organic farming, but the 1990 was produced before that transition, during an era when the château was already known for uncompromising quality standards.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with classic Bordeaux fare such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, venison, or slow-cooked mushroom dishes. Mature hard cheeses and truffle-based preparations also complement its earthy complexity. Serve at around 16-18°C and, given its age, decant gently shortly before serving to separate sediment and allow the wine to breathe without losing its delicate aromatic detail.

Producer
Château Latour is one of the most renowned estates in Bordeaux, with origins dating back to the 14th century and a place among the elite Premier Cru Classé estates in the 1855 classification. Located in Pauillac, it has long been admired for producing wines of extraordinary structure, concentration, and longevity. Since 1993, the estate has been owned by François Pinault, and it remains one of the benchmark names of the Médoc, celebrated for both its Grand Vin and the highly respected Les Forts de Latour.
