Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2014 Latour shows a deep, opaque garnet core with a youthful purple rim, signaling both concentration and vitality. The nose opens with layered aromas of wild berries and blackcurrant, underscored by notes of cigar wrapper, graphite, and clay-rich earth, then evolving toward black truffle, subtle spice and a finely judged touch of new oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and tightly coiled, with an immediate, broad attack that flows into a compact, deeply structured mid-palate. The fruit is pure and dark-toned—cassis, blackberry and wild plum—framed by powdery, chalk-tinged tannins and bright, precise acidity. Hints of tobacco leaf, cedar, and mineral drive carry through into a long, refreshing and finely etched finish. Still youthful and firmly structured, this 2014 has a classic profile reminiscent of cooler-vintage Latour (evoking comparisons to 1996), but with more complete ripeness and ultra-refined selection. In an Imperial format, it has outstanding aging potential, easily 30–40 years or more in a good cellar, with its most harmonious drinking window likely beginning from the mid-2030s onward.

Production
Château Latour sits on some of the finest terroir in Pauillac, on deep gravel mounds over a clay and limestone subsoil just inland from the Gironde estuary—conditions that favor Cabernet Sauvignon of great power, aromatic complexity and longevity. The Grand Vin is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, sourced primarily from the historic Enclos vineyard surrounding the château. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then sorted with rigorous precision before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it develops its signature structure and finesse, and is bottled after careful blending and maturation. In large formats such as this 6L Imperial, the slower evolution in bottle further emphasizes Latour’s innate depth and clarity.

Food & Serving
This 2014 Latour Imperial is a natural centerpiece for refined, richly flavored dishes: think dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison or game birds, and classic dishes with truffle, mushrooms, or Bordelaise sauce. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, mature Cheddar or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and structure. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended—2 to 3 hours for aeration if serving now, and even longer for those who prefer to soften the tannins and allow the layered bouquet to unfold fully in the glass.
