Description
Les Forts de Latour is the distinguished second wine of Château Latour, one of Pauillac’s most celebrated names and a Premier Grand Cru Classé. The 2019 vintage brings together classic Bordeaux structure, impressive depth, and the refinement you expect from this legendary estate, while offering a more approachable expression of Latour’s style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-purple colour, hinting at its concentration and youthful energy. The bouquet opens with cassis, blackberry, and dark cherry, followed by cedar, tobacco, graphite, and a subtle touch of spice. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet polished, with ripe tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish.
The 2019 vintage has the balance and structure to age beautifully over the coming years. While already expressive, it will continue to gain complexity with time in bottle, developing more tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and earth.
Production
Les Forts de Latour is made from selected parcels outside L’Enclos and from younger vines within the estate’s finest Pauillac terroir. The blend is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Petit Verdot adding texture and aromatic lift. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by around 20 months of ageing in barriques, including approximately 50% new oak, and the wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve depth and authenticity.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for ribeye, beef fillet, lamb, venison, and other richly flavoured meat dishes. It also works well with robust sauces and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to fully open.
Producer
Château Latour is one of the most iconic estates in Bordeaux, with a long history in Pauillac and a reputation for producing some of the Médoc’s most age-worthy wines. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate is widely admired for its precision, power, and consistency, and Les Forts de Latour carries that same unmistakable house style in a more accessible form.
