Description
Château Latour is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic names, renowned for producing wines of remarkable depth, structure, and longevity. From its historic Pauillac estate to its Premier Cru Classé status in the 1855 classification, it represents the very pinnacle of Left Bank excellence.
Tasting Notes
Château Latour 2017 is typically deep and concentrated in appearance, with a dark ruby to garnet core that hints at its power and precision. The nose is expected to show classic Pauillac character: blackcurrant, cassis, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and subtle earthy tones, supported by refined oak and mineral complexity.
On the palate, the wine is often commanding yet beautifully composed, with firm tannins, vibrant freshness, and layers of dark fruit, spice, and savoury nuance. The finish is long and persistent, and like most great Latour vintages, it has excellent ageing potential and will continue to evolve gracefully over many years.
Production
The wine comes from Château Latour’s 78 hectares of vineyards in Pauillac, where the terroir is defined by deep gravel and clay soils topped with large rounded stones that absorb and release heat throughout the day. The estate is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the vineyard is managed with an increasing focus on sustainable viticulture and a stronger balance between soil, vine, and environment. Harvesting is carried out with great care to ensure only the best fruit is selected, followed by meticulous vinification designed to preserve purity, structure, and the estate’s unmistakable sense of place.
Food & Serving
This is a wine that deserves equally thoughtful pairings, such as roast lamb, beef Wellington, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or truffled dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for several hours if opened young to allow the wine to fully express its aromatics and structure.
Producer
Château Latour’s history stretches back to the 14th century, when the original tower that gave the estate its name was built during the Hundred Years’ War. One of only four Médoc estates classified as Premier Cru Classé in 1855, it has long stood among the benchmark producers of Bordeaux and remains celebrated worldwide for consistency, power, and refinement. Since 1993, the estate has been owned by François Pinault, under whose stewardship Château Latour has continued to reinforce its status as one of the region’s great reference wines.
