Château de Beaucastel is one of the great names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an estate the Perrin family have shaped into a benchmark for the Southern Rhône. The wines are savoury, structured and built to age, which sets them apart from softer, fruitier reds. For Châteauneuf at its most serious, this is where to start.

History and the Perrin family behind Beaucastel

The property dates back centuries, but the modern estate took shape once the Perrin family took the reins in the early 1900s. They farmed organically here from 1950 and moved to biodynamics in 1974, long before either was fashionable. Four generations on, the family still works the vineyards by hand and ferments with native yeasts, chasing balance and truth to the terroir rather than sheer power. That patient approach is a big part of why Beaucastel ages so well, and why it ranks among the finest estates in the Rhône.

Grape varieties, terroir and the signature wines

Beaucastel is one of very few estates to plant and use all thirteen permitted grape varieties, grown on sandy soils and the heat-holding galets of Châteauneuf. What marks the house style is an unusually high share of Mourvèdre, around a third of the flagship red, giving dark fruit, leather and the backbone to age for decades; Grenache, Syrah and Counoise fill out the blend. The estate red is the classic to buy, while the Hommage à Jacques Perrin, made only in top vintages, is among the appellation's rarest wines and the Roussanne Vieilles Vignes is a benchmark white. Château de Beaucastel FAQ

Why is Beaucastel known for Mourvèdre?

Most Châteauneuf leans on Grenache, but Beaucastel gives Mourvèdre a leading role. It ripens well on the estate's warm galets and brings the structure and savoury depth that let the wines age for twenty years or more.

Should I drink it now or cellar it?

The reds reward patience. A good vintage drinks well from about ten years old and holds far longer, though decanting helps if you open one young.

What food pairs with Beaucastel?

Roast lamb, duck, game and beef stews are naturals, along with mushrooms and herb-driven Mediterranean cooking. The Roussanne white suits roast poultry, shellfish and dishes with fennel or saffron.
