Description

Château de Beaucastel’s Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2020 is one of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape’s most sought‑after and ageworthy reds, crafted only in the finest vintages. This monumental wine marries power, finesse and extraordinary depth, earning 99 points from The Wine Cellar Insider and already tipped as a potential “three‑digit” legend. Created as a tribute to Jacques Perrin, the visionary who helped define Beaucastel’s identity, it stands as the estate’s ultimate expression of Mourvèdre and the terroir of the southern Rhône.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Hommage à Jacques Perrin is opaque ruby to deep purple, with an almost inky core that hints at its concentration and longevity. The nose is hauntingly complex: violets and other dark florals lift out of the glass, followed by wet earth, truffle, licorice, cracked pepper and a cascade of blue and dark red fruits—plum, black cherry and blackberry compote. On the palate, this is both rich and remarkably light on its feet. Intensely flavoured blue and black fruits are wrapped in a velvety yet structured frame, with notes of dark cherry, licorice, smoked meat, savoury spice and a distinct chalky, almost saline edge. The tannins are firm, chewy and beautifully integrated, driving a finish that seems to go on for a full minute. Still primary and coiled today, it has enormous aging potential; patient collectors should ideally wait at least 10 years, with a drinking window stretching comfortably from 2030 to 2060 and beyond in optimal cellaring conditions.

Production
Hommage à Jacques Perrin is sourced from Beaucastel’s oldest Mourvèdre vines on the northern plateau of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape, where deep, clay‑limestone soils covered with rolled galets (rounded stones) moderate temperatures and store heat for slow, even ripening. The 2020 blend is dominated by Mourvèdre—at an historically high proportion for this cuvée—with Grenache, Syrah and a touch of Counoise adding lift and complexity. Harvesting is done by hand, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation typically proceeds in temperature‑controlled vats, often with a significant proportion of whole clusters to enhance structure and aromatic complexity, before aging in large old foudres that preserve freshness, terroir character and finesse over overt oak impact. The late picking of Mourvèdre in mid‑October underscores the estate’s commitment to full phenolic ripeness and depth.

Food & Serving
This is a grand gastronomic wine best matched with rich, flavourful dishes: slow‑braised lamb shanks, venison, wild boar, duck confit, truffle‑infused dishes, game birds, or deeply reduced beef stews. It can also shine alongside aged hard cheeses and earthy mushroom or lentil preparations. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decant generously for 2–3 hours to help the wine unfurl; as it matures past 15–20 years, a more gentle 60–90 minute decant—primarily for sediment—is recommended.

Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the great historic estates of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape, with family roots in the region dating back to the 16th century and a modern legacy shaped by the Perrin family. A pioneer of organic and later biodynamic viticulture in the southern Rhône, Beaucastel is renowned for championing all 13 permitted grape varieties of the appellation and for its deep, characterful expressions of Mourvèdre. Hommage à Jacques Perrin, first produced in 1989, is the domaine’s flagship wine, made only in exceptional vintages and in tiny quantities. It has become a benchmark for collectors worldwide, earning some of the highest critical scores in the region and reinforcing Beaucastel’s status as a reference point for powerful yet ageworthy Rhône reds.
