Description
Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2023 is a polished Tuscan red that captures the character of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in a warm, demanding vintage. Coming from one of Italy’s most iconic estates, it offers a generous, fruit-driven style with the finesse and freshness that have made Guidalberto a sought-after expression beyond the estate’s legendary Sassicaia.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, inviting ruby color. The nose is ripe and expressive, with layers of cherry, blackberry jam, and sweet spice, followed by brighter accents of orange zest and blood orange that add lift and definition.
The palate is medium- to full-bodied, rounded by lush primary fruit and softened by notes of cinnamon. Despite the vintage challenges, the wine keeps a lively, balanced feel, with enough freshness to carry the richness through the finish. It should drink well now and can continue to gain nuance over the next few years.
Production
Guidalberto 2023 comes from Tenuta San Guido’s Tuscan vineyards, where the warm vintage and periods of rain created pressure from mildew, especially on the earlier-ripening Merlot. Rigorous selection was essential, ensuring only the best fruit made it into the final blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The result is a wine shaped by careful vineyard work and precise vinification to preserve freshness, aromatic intensity, and balance.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile red for rich, flavorful dishes such as grilled steak, roast lamb, braised beef, or Tuscan-style pasta with meat sauce. It also pairs well with aged pecorino and hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C; decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to let the aromatics open fully and the texture become even more seamless.
Producer
Tenuta San Guido is one of Tuscany’s most prestigious estates and a landmark name in modern Italian wine. Best known for creating Sassicaia, the estate helped define the Super Tuscan movement and brought international attention to Bolgheri as a world-class wine region. Guidalberto reflects that same commitment to precision, elegance, and quality, offering a more approachable expression from a producer with an exceptional legacy.
