Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 MG is a Grenache-led Rhône red magnum with dark berry fruit, cured spice and a long cellar future ahead. This 1500 ml bottle gives the 2020 extra calm and depth. Beaucastel’s dark Mourvèdre line sits under the Grenache fruit, with Counoise adding a peppery edge.
About the Wine
Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 MG comes from the Perrin family’s Beaucastel estate near Courthézon in the southern Rhône. The farming is certified organic and biodynamic. The vineyard mix named here is Grenache, Mourvèdre, Counoise and Syrah. At Beaucastel, Mourvèdre carries a central role in the house style. The soils bring together galets roulés, sand and clay-limestone. The 2020 wine has the sun-filled weight of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, plus the darker savour that marks this address.
In the cellar, the wine is raised for 18 to 24 months in large French oak foudres. The large casks frame the fruit with a quiet cedar and tobacco line. They keep the focus on blackberry, raspberry and the deep spice of Mourvèdre. The magnum format is an important part of this bottle. It gives the 2020 Beaucastel a slower path in the cellar and a steadier evolution at the table. A faint tobacco note already sits around the blackberry core.
Tasting Notes
The first pour smells of forest strawberry and raspberry, then it turns darker with blackberry and blackcurrant. Give the 2020 Beaucastel air and the glass picks up licorice, mint, cured meat and the dried herb note that often appears in this estate’s mature bottles. On the palate it is full-bodied and concentrated, with polished tannins that feel broad rather than grainy. The Mourvèdre presence gives the centre a gamey pull, and the 15% alcohol sits inside a firm savoury frame. The finish runs long with tobacco, black fruit skin and a lifted herbal edge. Drink 2025-2045.
Food Pairing
Serve this magnum with food that has real depth and a savoury edge. Rosemary lamb shoulder, côte de boeuf and venison loin all make sense with the wine’s blackberry fruit, tobacco note and broad tannins. For a regional match, choose daube provençale with orange peel, black olives and thyme. The cured meat side of Beaucastel also suits saucisson, duck rillettes and a board with aged Comté or Tomme de Savoie. Open the bottle for a long meal, as the wine gains darker spice and a more gamey tone with air.
Producer
Château de Beaucastel stands apart in Châteauneuf-du-Pape for the authority it gives Mourvèdre, a grape that many estates use in smaller supporting roles. The Perrin family has built the estate’s identity around that darker grape voice, and it gives Beaucastel a savoury signature that is easy to recognise after a few years in bottle. The estate vineyard sits near Courthézon, where rounded stones, sand and clay-limestone appear together across the parcels. Farming at Beaucastel has long centred on organic work, and this bottling also carries biodynamic certification. In the cellar, the family uses large foudres for the grand vin, which gives the wines their broad shape and restrained oak imprint. Mature bottles of Beaucastel often move toward leather, truffle, cured meat and dried herbs, and the 2020 magnum is already showing the tobacco and dark fruit base for that evolution.
