The 2021 Côte-Rôtie Ampodium from Domaine René Rostaing is a beautifully expressive northern Rhône red, offered here in magnum format for even slower, more graceful evolution. Blending the perfume and lift of a small portion of Viognier with the depth and structure of Syrah, it captures both the finesse and power that make Côte-Rôtie so sought after.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby core with bright garnet reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is classically Côte-Rôtie: violet, black raspberry, blackberry, crushed pepper, and subtle smoky, floral, and savoury notes that unfold with air. On the palate, Ampodium is poised and layered, combining supple dark fruit with spice, mineral tension, and a fine, silky tannic frame. The magnum format gives the wine extra aging potential, and this 2021 vintage should continue to gain complexity over the next 8–15 years, developing more meaty, truffle-like, and earthy nuances over time.

Production
Ampodium is sourced from carefully selected vineyard parcels in Côte-Rôtie, where steep, terraced slopes, schist-rich soils, and the Rhône’s moderating influence create ideal conditions for Syrah. The small addition of Viognier helps enhance aromatics and texture, a traditional practice in the appellation. Domaine René Rostaing is known for meticulous viticulture and restrained, parcel-sensitive vinification that aims to preserve purity, precision, and the character of the site.

Food & Serving
This wine is a superb match for roasted lamb, duck breast, game birds, beef fillet, or richly seasoned mushrooms. It also works beautifully with slow-cooked dishes and hard aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young, especially in magnum, to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.
