Description
Château de Beaucastel’s Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2018 in DBMG (3L) is one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered and collectible red wines, presented here in a luxurious double magnum format. Crafted as a tribute to the late Jacques Perrin, the visionary who elevated Beaucastel to global fame, this cuvée is produced only in the finest vintages and in very small quantities. Dominated by old-vine Mourvèdre, it marries power, aromatic complexity and longevity in a way very few Châteauneuf-du-Papes can match.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Hommage à Jacques Perrin is deep, opaque ruby with a dark, almost inky core, hinting at its concentration and aging potential. The nose is strikingly complex and already quite expressive: layers of red fruits—ripe cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry—interweave with the classic Beaucastel garrigue character of bay leaf, thyme and lavender. Beneath that, darker, more savory tones emerge: black olives, roasted meat, espresso, star anise and dark chocolate, all unfolding gradually with air.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, intense and remarkably structured. The Mourvèdre at its core gives a firm, finely woven tannic frame and a sense of gravitas, while the supporting varieties bring juiciness, lift and aromatic breadth. Flavors echo the nose: pure red fruit is wrapped in notes of spice, dried herbs and smoky, gamey nuances, carried by vibrant acidity that keeps everything fresh despite the richness. The finish is very long, driven by a persistent, fine-grained tannin matrix and a lingering note of dark cocoa and savory herbs. This 2018 has the structure to reward patience; in double magnum, it should ideally be cellared a minimum of 5–7 years from vintage and can easily evolve gracefully for 20–30 years or more.
Production
Hommage à Jacques Perrin hails from Château de Beaucastel’s biodynamically farmed vineyards in the northern sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the classic galets roulés (large rolled river stones) overlay clay- and limestone-based soils. These stones store heat during the day and release it at night, aiding full ripeness, while the underlying clay helps preserve moisture and freshness—particularly important for Mourvèdre. The fruit comes primarily from very old Mourvèdre vines (around 60% of the blend), complemented by Grenache, Syrah and Counoise from select parcels. Harvesting is done by hand, with strict sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe grapes are used. Fermentation is typically carried out variety by variety, often with a significant proportion of whole clusters, in traditional vats, followed by long macerations to extract depth and complexity. The wine is then aged in large, neutral oak foudres and/or older barrels to preserve terroir character rather than impart overt oak flavor, before final blending and bottling with minimal intervention to maintain purity and ageworthiness.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a superb match for richly flavored, slow-cooked dishes and game. Think roast lamb with herbs de Provence, braised beef cheeks, venison stew, duck with wild mushrooms, or hearty dishes featuring truffle, black olives or Mediterranean spices. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and dishes that showcase earthy components like lentils, root vegetables and rosemary. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); avoid serving too warm to preserve freshness and aromatic detail. In double magnum format, the wine will evolve more slowly, so decanting is highly recommended—young bottles can benefit from 2–3 hours in a broad decanter, while more mature examples may need closer to 1 hour, just enough to let the bouquet fully open without tiring the wine.
Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the historic and benchmark estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with roots in the region dating back to the 16th century and the Perrin family at the helm since the early 1900s. Under Jacques Perrin and subsequent generations, Beaucastel became synonymous with meticulous vineyard work, early adoption of organic and then biodynamic farming, and a steadfast commitment to all 13 permitted Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties, with a special emphasis on Mourvèdre. The estate’s wines are widely recognized for their capacity to age, their distinctive garrigue-tinged complexity and their balance of power and finesse. Hommage à Jacques Perrin, created as a tribute to the family patriarch, sits at the very top of the range and is produced only in exceptional years, consistently earning some of the highest accolades from critics and collectors and helping cement Beaucastel’s reputation as one of the Rhône Valley’s most important producers.
