Description

Bottled only in the finest vintages and here presented in an impressive magnum, Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2014 is one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered wines. This is Beaucastel’s flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape, crafted as a tribute to the late Jacques Perrin and renowned for its depth, longevity and almost Burgundian elegance despite its power. The 2014 has been hailed by critics as a benchmark for the vintage, delivering extraordinary concentration, precision and complexity in a year where few wines reached this level.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Hommage à Jacques Perrin is virtually opaque, with a deep inky core and a dark garnet rim that hints at its youth and intensity. The nose is intensely expressive, layered with notes of black truffle, blueberry, black plum and blackberry, intertwined with charcoal, smoked meat, roasted herbs and a stony, crushed-rock minerality. Subtle tones of liquorice, black pepper and warm spice add further complexity as it opens in the glass. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense and silky, coating the mouth with concentrated black and blue fruits—blackberry, black cherry, mulberry and damson—framed by savoury notes of game, cured meat and grilled herbs. The texture is rich and glycerol-smooth, yet lifted by a vibrant line of freshness that keeps it from ever feeling heavy. The tannins are abundant but ultra-fine, providing structure for a very long, persistent finish where smoke, graphite, dark chocolate and spice linger. This is a wine built for the long haul: while already compelling with a decant, it will reward 4–6 years of additional cellaring and should evolve beautifully for at least two further decades in magnum format.

Production
Hommage à Jacques Perrin is sourced from some of Château de Beaucastel’s oldest and most prized parcels in the northern sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the classic galets roulés (large, sun-warmed pebbles) sit over clay- and limestone-rich subsoils. This terroir, combined with the Mistral wind and a warm Mediterranean climate, yields grapes of exceptional ripeness and concentration while preserving freshness. The cuvée is dominated by 70% old-vine Mourvèdre, complemented by 10% Syrah, 10% Grenache and 10% Counoise. Harvest is carried out by hand with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. Each variety is vinified separately, typically with a portion of whole clusters, before aging—Mourvèdre and Syrah largely in oak casks, Grenache and Counoise mostly in large foudres—to harmonise structure and aromatics. The final blend is assembled after élevage, respecting both the character of the vintage and the signature style of Hommage: profound, structured and intensely expressive.

Food & Serving
This is a powerful, complex Châteauneuf-du-Pape that shines alongside richly flavoured, savoury dishes. Think roasted or braised lamb with rosemary and garlic, slow-cooked beef cheeks, venison or other game, cassoulet, or dishes that feature truffle, wild mushrooms or confit duck. Aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Gouda also make excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. In its youth, especially from magnum, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the wine to unfurl; as it matures, a gentle 1-hour decant to remove sediment and awaken the bouquet will be sufficient.

Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the most illustrious estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a cornerstone of the Southern Rhône, with records of viticulture on the property dating back to the 16th century. Under the stewardship of the Perrin family for multiple generations, Beaucastel has become synonymous with authenticity, organic farming and the championing of Mourvèdre and all thirteen permitted Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties. Hommage à Jacques Perrin, first produced in 1989, is the domaine’s rarest and most sought-after cuvée, made only in exceptional years and always Mourvèdre-led. The wine regularly receives top scores from leading critics and is considered one of the greatest red wines of the Rhône, cementing Beaucastel’s reputation as a benchmark producer in the region.
