Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 DBMG is a Grenache-led Rhône red with dark berry fruit, tobacco and magnum-scale depth from Beaucastel. The 3000 ml bottle gives this 2020 a slower pulse and a serious sense of occasion. Expect ripe red and black fruit, garrigue and the estate’s unmistakable Mourvèdre savour.
About the Wine
Château de Beaucastel farms its Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards biodynamically on the northern side of the appellation near Courthézon. The 2020 DBMG comes from Rhône parcels strewn with rounded galets roulés over clay and sand. Those stones sit right in the identity of this estate wine and the clay gives the blend a deep reservoir of dark fruit. Grenache leads the blend, with Mourvèdre, Counoise and Syrah adding Beaucastel’s darker spice and game-toned signature. At 15% alcohol, the fruit reads ripe and broad from the start.
In the cellar, the wine is raised for 18 months in large oak foudres. That format matters for this 3000 ml DBMG and the wine carries tobacco and licorice through a broad, slowly seasoned texture. The 2020 blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Counoise and Syrah feels built for a long arc in bottle. The large foudres leave a discreet cedar note around blackberry, dried herb and cured meat. In this double magnum, the élevage reads composed and the fruit still feels coiled.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape DBMG opens with ripe forest strawberry, raspberry and blackcurrant before a darker wave of blackberry liqueur and crushed cherry fills the glass for several minutes. Air brings licorice, mint and tobacco leaf, then a Beaucastel note of cured meat and sun-warmed garrigue that feels closely tied to the Mourvèdre presence in this blend. The palate is full-bodied and muscular, with polished tannins that grip the cheeks and a savory line of black olive, pepper and dried thyme running under the fruit. In this 3000 ml bottle the fruit feels compact and youthful, and the dry finish lingers with dark berry skin, warm stone and a final echo of tobacco leaf. Drink 2024-2040.
Food Pairing
Pour this 2020 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape DBMG with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, where the wine’s black fruit and tobacco settle into browned garlic and rosemary. For a Rhône table, daube provençale with olives and orange zest is the regional choice, especially if the sauce has a little smoked bacon and thyme. Venison loin with juniper and a glossy pan sauce picks up the Mourvèdre side of the blend, especially the cured meat and black olive notes. A board of saucisson sec, Bayonne ham and aged Comté suits a long evening with this double magnum, as salt draws out raspberry fruit and tobacco leaf. If you open it young, choose ribeye with charred edges or a mushroom tart with thyme, and give the glass time to move from blackberry toward garrigue.
Producer
Château de Beaucastel is the flagship estate of Famille Perrin, and its red Châteauneuf-du-Pape has long carried an unusually strong Mourvèdre imprint for the appellation from young release through maturity and in the final cellar blend bottled under the château name. That choice gives bottles like the 2020 DBMG a dark register of cured meat and black fruit, with tannin that feels architectural and grounded after the first serious swirl in a wide glass at this early stage of its drinking window. The vineyards sit on the northern side of Châteauneuf-du-Pape near Courthézon, where rolled galets roulés cover clay and sand across old estate parcels that can hold remarkable depth in dry years under the family’s farming. In the 2020 wine the biodynamic farming context meets a herbal clarity of mint and thyme, with garrigue folded into the earthy richness of ripe Grenache and Mourvèdre from this site in a way that marks this cuvée immediately. Large foudres shape the élevage for this wine over 18 months, and the oak presence reads as cedar and tobacco leaf with a slow oxygen feel around the blackberry core as the wine opens in the glass. The estate’s best bottles age slowly, with Mourvèdre bringing leather, truffle and game notes that gather around the black fruit over a long dinner in a 3000 ml format like this double magnum.
