Description
Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2018 in magnum format is one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered and age‑worthy red wines. This rare cuvée, produced only in the finest vintages and in very limited quantities, showcases Mourvèdre at its most profound and expressive. In 2018 it delivers tremendous aromatic complexity, power and finesse, crafted for collectors and lovers of great Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Hommage à Jacques Perrin shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet core with vibrant purple reflections, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is intensely perfumed and layered: vivid red fruits—cherries, raspberries and wild strawberries—are interwoven with notes of garrigue (thyme, lavender and bay leaf), followed by black olive, roasted meat, espresso, star anise and dark chocolate. It’s an aromatic profile that evolves continuously in the glass, revealing new subtleties with air.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense and remarkably structured, driven by its high proportion of Mourvèdre (around 60%). The attack is plush with ripe red and dark berry fruit, then quickly framed by a firm, fine-grained tannic structure and lively acidity. Savory tones of game, smoked meat, tapenade and cocoa add depth, while the finish is very long, persistent and mineral, carried by a taut matrix of tannins. In magnum, this 2018 has outstanding aging potential: it is best cellared for at least 5–7 years before opening, and will continue to evolve beautifully over two to three decades.
Production
Sourced from Château de Beaucastel’s historic vineyards in the northern sector of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape, Hommage à Jacques Perrin is rooted in classic Rhône terroir: rolled galets roulés (rounded river stones), limestone and sandy-clay soils that retain heat by day and release it at night, helping Mourvèdre achieve full ripeness. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, with careful hand-harvesting and rigorous selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery. The blend is dominated by old-vine Mourvèdre (around 60%), complemented by Grenache, Syrah and other permitted Châteauneuf varieties, each parcel vinified separately. Traditional vinification with gentle extraction preserves fruit purity and structural finesse, followed by aging in large oak foudres and barrels that impart texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s intrinsic character.
Food & Serving
This powerful, nuanced Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes: slow-braised lamb shanks with rosemary, roasted venison, duck breast with cherry or berry sauce, game birds, wild mushroom dishes and truffle-infused cuisine all highlight its depth and garrigue character. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the wine to open and soften the tannins. As the wine matures (10+ years from vintage), a gentle 1–2 hour decant is sufficient, primarily to separate it from any sediment.
Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the benchmark estates of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape and a reference point for lovers of Rhône wines worldwide. Owned and run by the Perrin family for generations, the domaine has long been a pioneer of organic and later biodynamic viticulture in the region. Hommage à Jacques Perrin, first created in honor of the visionary Jacques Perrin, represents the pinnacle of the estate’s production and is produced only in exceptional vintages from its oldest Mourvèdre-dominated parcels. Frequently awarded top scores by international critics and consistently featured among the greatest wines of the Rhône, this cuvée has cemented Beaucastel’s reputation as one of the most important and influential producers in southern France.
