Description
Château de Beaucastel’s Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2019 in double magnum (3L) is one of the Rhône Valley’s most coveted wines, crafted only in exceptional vintages as a tribute to the late Jacques Perrin. This is a profound, monumentally concentrated Châteauneuf-du-Pape that marries sheer power with remarkable poise and detail. Bottled in a large-format 3L, it’s built for long aging and for the kind of special occasions where only the very best will do.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Hommage à Jacques Perrin is almost opaque, with a deep, inky ruby core and a vivid, youthful rim that hints at its long life ahead. The nose is intensely expressive, layering blackberries, dark cherries and plums with notes of smoked cherry, grilled meat, cracked black pepper and violets, alongside hints of truffle, wood bark and savoury herbs. Subtle floral tones and a whisper of smoke and spice add further complexity as it opens.
On the palate, this is massively concentrated yet perfectly balanced, with a dense, velvet-textured core of dark, ripe fruit. Flavours of black raspberry, blackcurrant and plum are wrapped in peppery spice, roasted game, licorice and garrigue. The structure is formidable: ripe, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant underlying freshness carry an extraordinarily long finish, easily stretching to a minute or more. This is not a wine for impatience—its full potential will only emerge with time. Expect a long aging window, with the wine entering its ideal drinking phase from around 2030 and evolving gracefully through 2050 and beyond in this large format.
Production
Hommage à Jacques Perrin is sourced from Château de Beaucastel’s historic holdings in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where old-vine plots sit on a classic mix of galets roulés (rounded river stones), clay and limestone. These warm, stony soils, combined with the Mistral wind, yield intensely flavored grapes while preserving freshness and lift. The cuvée is traditionally Mourvèdre-led, drawing on very old vines that deliver naturally low yields and great concentration; the blend is completed with Grenache, Syrah and other permitted varieties. Harvesting is done by hand with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit. Each variety is vinified separately, typically with temperature-controlled fermentation and a careful extraction to maintain both depth and finesse, before long élevage in a mix of foudres and other vessels. The final blend is assembled to emphasize structure, longevity and the singular, sauvage character that defines this cuvée.
Food & Serving
This is a grand, structured red best paired with richly flavored, slow-cooked dishes: braised or grilled beef, lamb shank, venison, game birds, truffle-infused dishes, or deeply reduced stews and ragùs all work beautifully. Earthy components such as wild mushrooms, root vegetables, and lentils complement its savoury depth, while aged hard cheeses can be a superb end-of-meal match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, particularly from a 3L format, decant generously—at least 2–3 hours, and even longer for maximum expression. As it matures, decant more gently to separate sediment and allow the bouquet to unfurl.
