Description

Bottled in an imposing 6-liter Imperial, the 2021 Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin is one of the Rhône’s most collectible and ageworthy red wines. Crafted only in top vintages, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée pays tribute to Jacques Perrin and showcases a Mourvèdre-driven expression of the estate’s legendary terroir. The 2021 is approximately 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and 20% Syrah, combining power, refinement and remarkable aging potential in a format made for the cellar and truly special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Hommage à Jacques Perrin is deeply colored, with an opaque, inky core that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is complex and layered, opening with notes of blackberries and black cherries, followed by nuances of truffle, forest floor, wood bark, licorice and a peppery, savory spice that is very much a signature of the Mourvèdre. On the palate, this is full-bodied and richly textured, yet remarkably poised. The fruit is dark and pure—blackberry, black cherry and plum—wrapped in velvety tannins that are abundant but finely knit. Subtle hints of smoked meat, garrigue, spice and mineral drive add depth as the wine fans out into a long, persistent finish with impressive structure and intensity. The 2021 Hommage is built for longevity; in this large-format bottle, you can comfortably expect at least two decades of evolution, and likely more, as the tannins soften and the savory, truffle and game notes become more pronounced over time.

Production
Château de Beaucastel sits on one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s great terroirs, a plateau of mixed clay, sand and limestone strewn with the famous galets roulés (large rounded stones) that store daytime heat and release it slowly through the night. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, with low yields and meticulous attention to vine health, which is especially crucial for old-vine Mourvèdre. Grapes for Hommage à Jacques Perrin are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and rigorously sorted to retain only the finest fruit. Vinification typically involves separate fermentation of each variety, often with a significant proportion of whole clusters for added structure and freshness. The wine is then aged in a combination of large oak foudres and other carefully selected vessels, allowing for slow, harmonious integration of tannins and aromatics while preserving the purity and energy of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a powerful, structured Châteauneuf-du-Pape that shines with richly flavored dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, game birds, venison, beef short ribs, truffled dishes or roasted mushrooms, and hearty stews like daube Provençale. Aged hard cheeses, such as Comté, mature Gouda or aged Manchego, can also make excellent partners. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended—especially from a 6L Imperial—to allow the wine to unfold and the tannins to relax; as it matures, a gentle 1–2 hour decant to remove sediment and awaken the aromatics will be sufficient.

Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the most revered estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a benchmark for Rhône wines worldwide. The Perrin family has been at the helm for generations, with a history at the property dating back to the early 20th century and a pioneering commitment to organic and later biodynamic viticulture. Known for embracing Mourvèdre in an appellation often dominated by Grenache, Beaucastel produces wines of depth, complexity and longevity that have helped define the region’s modern identity. Hommage à Jacques Perrin, first produced in 1989, is the estate’s most iconic cuvée, released only in exceptional years and consistently earning top critical acclaim, cementing Beaucastel’s status as one of the great names of the Southern Rhône.
