Description

Bottled in an impressive 6-liter Imperial, the 2020 Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin is one of the Rhône Valley’s most coveted and ageworthy reds. This is the estate’s legendary tribute cuvée, produced only in top vintages and crafted to evolve gracefully for decades. The 2020 stands out for its extraordinary concentration of Mourvèdre, elegance in spite of its power, and near-unanimous critical acclaim, including 99 points from Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider).

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape is deep, opaque ruby with a dark, nearly black core that clings to the sides of the glass, promising density and structure. The nose is strikingly complex: violets and wildflowers mingle with notes of wet earth, blue and black fruits, dark cherries, and plums, supported by licorice, truffle, spice, and a subtle, savory meatiness. It’s at once fragrant and brooding, with new layers emerging as the wine opens. On the palate, the wine is intense, powerful, and deeply concentrated, yet remarkably poised and light on its feet. Waves of dark red and blue fruits (blackberry, blueberry, black plum) roll across the mouth, framed by fine, mouthcoating tannins and vibrant freshness. There’s a chewy, meaty, peppery and faintly chalky edge that drives through the long, velvety finish, which easily lingers for a full minute. Still primordial and tightly coiled, this is a wine built for the cellar: expect it to hit its stride from around 2030 and continue to evolve beautifully through 2060 and beyond, with the large-format Imperial extending its aging curve even further.

Production
Sourced from Château de Beaucastel’s historic vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the southern Rhône of France, Hommage à Jacques Perrin is anchored in the estate’s signature galet-strewn terroir—large rolled pebbles over clay and sand that store warmth by day and release it at night, helping Mourvèdre reach perfect ripeness. The 2020 blend is driven by approximately 75–60% Mourvèdre (the highest proportion ever used in this cuvée, going back to 1989), complemented by Grenache, Syrah, and a touch of Counoise. The Mourvèdre was picked unusually late, beginning around October 15, ensuring full phenolic maturity and depth of flavor. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested, sorted, and traditionally vinified parcel by parcel, with a focus on gentle extraction to preserve finesse as well as structure. The wine is then aged in large foudres, where it develops its hallmark complexity, integration, and textural polish before being bottled in very limited quantities, especially in large formats like this 6L Imperial.

Food & Serving
This is a monumental, gastronomic wine that calls for equally serious, hearty dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shank, roast leg of lamb with Provençal herbs, game birds, venison, beef short ribs, or richly sauced stews like daube de boeuf. Earthy components—truffles, wild mushrooms, roasted root vegetables, and aged hard cheeses—will echo the wine’s savory, earthy nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F), slightly cooler than room temperature, to keep its power in balance. Given its youth and structure, especially in Imperial format, decanting is strongly recommended: for current enjoyment, give it at least 3–4 hours in a large decanter; from 2030 onward, 1–2 hours should suffice to fully reveal its layers.

Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the most revered estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a benchmark for the southern Rhône as a whole. Owned and run by the Perrin family for generations, Beaucastel is renowned for championing Mourvèdre and preserving all 13 permitted grape varieties of the appellation, as well as for its early and longstanding commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Hommage à Jacques Perrin, created in honor of the late Jacques Perrin, represents the pinnacle of the estate’s production and is only made in outstanding vintages. Over the years it has achieved cult status among collectors, regularly earning top scores and being recognized as one of the world’s great ageworthy red wines, firmly cementing Beaucastel’s significance in the Rhône and beyond.
