Description
William Fèvre Espino Carmenère 2019 is a Chilean red that blends classic French winemaking heritage with the distinctive character of Central Valley Carménère. Crafted by the famed Chablis pioneer’s Chilean outpost, it offers ripe New World fruit framed by Old World balance and restraint. This vintage captures the variety’s hallmark dark fruit and spice while remaining polished, approachable, and exceptionally good value for its quality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Carmenère shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue with a youthful intensity at the rim. The nose opens with ripe blackberries, plums, and black cherries, layered with notes of sweet spice, black pepper, a touch of paprika, and subtle hints of cocoa and fresh herbs.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a generous core of dark fruit supported by supple tannins and a fresh, well-integrated acidity. Flavors of ripe black fruit, cassis, and dark chocolate mingle with savory notes of tobacco leaf and gentle oak spice, leading to a smooth, lingering finish. The 2019 has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 3–5 years, but it is already drinking very well in its youth, especially with food.
Production
Espino Carmenère is sourced from vineyards in Chile’s D.O. Central Valley, where warm, sunny days and cooler nights allow Carménère to ripen fully while retaining freshness. The stony, well-drained soils combined with Chile’s dry climate and Andean influence provide ideal conditions for healthy, concentrated fruit. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, typically by hand in selected parcels to preserve fruit integrity. In the cellar, William Fèvre applies a French-influenced approach: careful sorting, temperature-controlled fermentation to protect aromatics, and a measured use of oak to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the varietal character, resulting in a refined, balanced expression of Carménère.
Food & Serving
This Carmenère is a natural partner for grilled and roasted meats such as lamb, beef, and pork, as well as spicy sausages, burgers, and hearty stews. It also works beautifully with charcuterie, mature semi-hard cheeses, roasted vegetables, and dishes seasoned with paprika, cumin, or smoked peppers. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture. A short decant of 30 minutes can help the wine open up and soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed in its younger years.
Producer
Domaine William Fèvre is best known for its historic, trailblazing work in Chablis, but the Fèvre family extended their vision to Chile, drawn by its pristine climate and exceptional potential for fine wine. Settling in the Maipo and broader Central Valley regions, they brought Burgundian rigor and precision to the Southern Hemisphere, crafting wines that combine French structure with Chile’s ripe, sun-blessed fruit. Even after William Fèvre’s retirement, the estate continues to follow a quality-focused, ‘old world’ philosophy—meticulous vineyard work, controlled yields, and carefully judged oak—earning a strong reputation for elegant, characterful wines that overdeliver for their price and highlighting Chile’s capacity for premium, terroir-driven bottlings.
