Description
Weingut Pichler-Krutzler Grüner Veltliner Ried Supperin 2024 is a precise, quietly powerful expression of Wachau Grüner from one of the region’s most coveted single vineyards. Guided by the philosophy “as much as necessary, as little as possible,” this wine focuses on purity, clarity and unforced elegance. From old vines rooted deep in a high-plateau Clos above Dürnstein, it captures both the cool, stony calm of its site and the vibrant energy of the 2024 vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grüner Veltliner shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with silvery-green reflections, hinting at its youthful freshness and mineral drive. The nose is layered and refined, opening with ripe Williams pear and yellow apple, followed by delicate notes of pickled green pepper. Subtle floral tones of hay blossom mingle with fine herbal and tea-like nuances such as matcha and tarragon, all set against a cool, stony backdrop.
On the palate, the wine is taut yet textured, with a precise, linear structure that carries its ripe fruit and savory spice in perfect balance. Juicy pear and crisp apple are framed by a gentle, peppery lift and a firm, saline minerality, giving the wine both drinkability and depth. The finish is long, quietly persistent and very clean, with a fine phenolic grip that suggests excellent gastronomic potential. While wonderfully approachable in its youth, this 2024 Supperin has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for 5–8 years, gaining further complexity and integrating its herbal and spicy notes even more harmoniously.
Production
Ried Supperin is a walled single vineyard (Clos) set on a flat high plateau above Dürnstein in the Wachau, a site that naturally promotes slow, even ripening. The soils are dominated by grey, eroded gneiss and schist interlaced with stone dust, a poor, stony matrix that forces the 45–50-year-old vines to root deeply, resulting in low yields and concentrated, mineral-driven fruit. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, fully destemmed, and pressed under minimal pressure to obtain a particularly gentle, pure juice. Fermentation and maturation take place in large, partly used Stockinger oak casks, where the wine rests slowly on its fine lees until bottling, gaining texture, nuance and inner calm without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Grüner Veltliner is an outstanding partner for refined, produce-driven cuisine. It pairs beautifully with freshwater fish (trout, char, pike-perch), steamed shellfish, and delicately prepared white meats such as poached chicken or veal, as well as classic Austrian dishes like Wiener Schnitzel. Its peppery, herbal profile also complements vegetable-led plates—think asparagus, artichokes, fennel, or dishes with fresh herbs, light Asian-inspired cuisine, and high-quality sushi or sashimi. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally at 10–12°C, to allow the aromas to unfurl. Young bottles benefit from a brief opening in advance; for more expression, a light decant of 30 minutes can help the wine reveal additional layers of fruit, spice and minerality.
Producer
Weingut Pichler-Krutzler is a relatively young yet already highly regarded estate in the Wachau, bringing together deep regional roots with a modern, quality-driven mindset. Founded by husband-and-wife team Elisabeth Pichler and Erich Krutzler, the winery draws on the long-standing Pichler family tradition in the Wachau and Krutzler’s experience from southern Burgenland to craft precise, terroir-focused wines. Working some of the region’s finest sites around Dürnstein, they have quickly become a reference point for uncompromising vineyard work, low-intervention cellar practices and an emphasis on elegance over sheer power. Their single-vineyard bottlings, such as Ried Supperin, are sought after for their clarity, tension and faithful expression of place, reinforcing the estate’s reputation as one of the most exciting names in modern Austrian wine.
