Description

Petit-Roy Fleurie 2021 is a vibrant, finely etched expression of Gamay from one of Beaujolais’ most coveted crus. Crafted in a delicate, Burgundian style, it showcases Fleurie’s trademark perfume and finesse rather than sheer power. Drawing on Petit-Roy’s minimalist, terroir-driven approach, this is a red that bridges the gap between serious Burgundy and beautifully drinkable Beaujolais.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Petit-Roy Fleurie 2021 shows a luminous ruby color with purple highlights, signaling both freshness and youth. The nose is lifted and floral, with notes of violets and rose petals leading into wild strawberries, red cherries and raspberries, supported by subtle hints of crushed stones, dried herbs and a gentle spice. On the palate, the wine is silky and medium-bodied, with juicy red berry fruit wrapped around a fine, chalky tannin structure. There’s a lovely tension between bright acidity and ripe fruit, giving the wine both immediate charm and a precise, linear finish. You may detect layers of pomegranate, cranberry and a touch of white pepper as it opens in the glass. While already approachable and highly enjoyable now, this 2021 has the balance and freshness to evolve gracefully over the next 4–6 years, gaining more complexity and savory nuance with time.

Production
Fleurie is one of the highest and most celebrated crus of Beaujolais, with granitic, sandy soils that naturally lend elegance, fragrance and minerality to Gamay. Petit-Roy sources fruit from carefully tended vineyards, typically worked with an emphasis on sustainability and low yields to maximize concentration. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve intact bunches and fruit purity. In the cellar, Petit-Roy favors a gentle, low-intervention approach: semi‑carbonic or whole‑bunch fermentation is commonly used to highlight aromatics and finesse, with native yeasts and minimal extraction. Maturation in neutral vessels (such as older barrels or tanks) helps maintain freshness and lets the granite-driven character of Fleurie shine through, without masking it in heavy oak.

Food & Serving
This Fleurie is wonderfully versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken, charcuterie, grilled salmon, duck breast, mushroom dishes, and lighter cuts of pork or veal. It also works very well with semi-soft cheeses and simple bistro fare such as steak-frites or a classic roast vegetable tart. Serve slightly chilled, around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to emphasize its freshness and aromatic lift. Decanting for 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal more floral and mineral notes, especially in its youth.

Producer
Petit-Roy is a small, quality-focused domaine and micro-négociant based in Burgundy, known for producing characterful, terroir-driven wines in limited quantities. Led by a new generation of grower-winemakers who favor organics, low-intervention methods and precise craftsmanship, Petit-Roy has quickly earned a reputation for wines that are both expressive and elegantly restrained. While rooted in Burgundy, the estate’s work in Beaujolais—particularly in crus like Fleurie—highlights the shared sensibility between top Gamay and Pinot Noir: purity of fruit, transparency of terroir and refined structure. This cross-regional perspective has made Petit-Roy a sought-after name for drinkers who value nuance, freshness and authenticity in their wines.
