Description

Peter Wetzer Kékfrankos 2022 is a vivid, finely etched expression of Hungary’s great Blaufränkisch grape from the historic Sopron region. This is red wine with energy and precision rather than weight: pure, cool-toned fruit wrapped in a taut yet silken structure. It showcases Kékfrankos in its most authentic, terroir-driven form, balancing wild character with quiet elegance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 shows a bright, translucent ruby color with a lively, almost electric hue that hints at freshness and lift. The nose is pure and inviting: crunchy raspberry, blackcurrant and sour cherry, layered with notes of wild herbs, subtle spice and a faintly ethereal, eucalyptus-like lift. Nothing feels heavy or sweet; it’s all about clarity and finesse. On the palate, the wine is juicy and linear, with a slender, almost wiry frame carried by refreshing acidity and fine, silky-cool tannins. Red and black berry fruit—raspberry, cassis and morello cherry—unfold in a precise, unadorned way, joined by a gentle herbal undertone and a touch of earth that anchors the fruit. The finish is clean, sapid and moreish, encouraging the next sip rather than overwhelming the palate. While this Kékfrankos is crafted for vibrant, near-term drinking over the next 3–6 years, its structure suggests it will evolve gracefully in bottle, gaining a bit more depth and savoury complexity with short to mid-term cellaring.

Production
Sourced from vineyards around Sopron—once historically tied to Austria’s Burgenland—this Kékfrankos grows on a mix of gravelly and volcanic-influenced soils that naturally favor freshness, spice and fine tannin over sheer power. Peter Wetzer works with low yields and primarily hand-harvested fruit, selecting only healthy, optimally ripe bunches to preserve the grape’s natural tension and aromatic lift. In the cellar, his philosophy is minimalist: gentle extraction, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and a restrained use of oak (often older barrels or large casks) to avoid masking the clarity of fruit and the signature cool, herbal-mineral edge of Sopron. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of place and vintage rather than winemaking artifice.

Food & Serving
This lithe, juicy Kékfrankos is extremely versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted poultry, charcuterie, pork chops, paprika-spiced sausages, goulash, stuffed peppers, mushroom dishes and hard or semi-hard cheeses. Its bright acidity and fine-grained tannins also make it an excellent partner for tomato-based dishes and herb-driven Mediterranean cuisine. Serve at 14–16°C, slightly cooler than many full-bodied reds, to emphasize its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, but long decanting is not necessary—this is a wine that’s ready to drink and enjoys being approached with a bit of spontaneity.

Producer
Péter Wetzer is one of the key names in Hungary’s new generation of terroir-focused, low-intervention winemakers. Based in Sopron, on the country’s northwestern edge near the Austrian border, he has made it his mission to showcase Kékfrankos and other traditional varieties in a transparent, unforced style. Working primarily with old vines and historic sites, Wetzer farms with great respect for the environment and intervenes as little as possible in the cellar, allowing the character of Sopron’s soils and climate to shine. His wines are widely regarded among sommeliers and enthusiasts as benchmarks for authentic, elegant Hungarian reds, helping to restore Sopron’s reputation as one of Central Europe’s classic homes for Blaufränkisch/Kékfrankos.
