Dépagneux Morgon Côte du Py Mathilde 2023 is a characterful Beaujolais red that showcases Gamay at its most serious and refined. Sourced from the famed Côte du Py hillside, this cuvée combines ripe, vibrant fruit with a striking mineral backbone. With a family estate dating back to 1865 and a relentless focus on low yields and meticulous selection, it offers an authentic expression of one of Morgon’s most prestigious terroirs.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Morgon shows a deep, luminous ruby color with violet reflections, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, offering notes of ripe black cherry, crushed raspberry and wild strawberry, intertwined with hints of violets, black pepper, wet stone, and a subtle touch of licorice and graphite typical of Côte du Py’s volcanic soils.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet structured, with silky but assertive tannins and a refreshing, mouthwatering acidity. Juicy red and dark berry fruit is supported by savory notes of spice, dried herbs and a fine, earthy minerality that carries through to a long, precise finish. Still youthful in 2023, it drinks beautifully now with a bit of air but has the balance and structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and softer texture with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Dépagneux Morgon Côte du Py Mathilde 2023 come from the iconic Côte du Py slope in Morgon, where old vines sink their roots deep into schistous, volcanic and decomposed granite soils. This privileged terroir, combined with naturally limited yields, concentrates flavor and structure. The estate, in the same family since 1865, farms with a strict focus on quality: harvest is done entirely by hand, followed by rigorous sorting so that only perfectly healthy and ripe Gamay clusters are used. Vinification typically follows the traditional Beaujolais approach for Morgon, with semi-carbonic or carefully managed whole-cluster fermentation in vats to preserve aromatic brightness while extracting fine tannins and terroir character, before a period of maturation in tank and/or neutral wood to refine texture without masking the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Morgon pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, roast chicken, grilled pork, duck, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or earthy root vegetables. It is also excellent with semi-soft cheeses such as Tomme, Comté or mild blue cheeses, and can stand up well to bistro classics like steak frites or coq au vin. Serve at around 14–16°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. For optimal enjoyment, especially in its youth, lightly decant for 30–45 minutes before serving to allow the aromas and structure to fully open.
Producer
The Dépagneux family estate has been in operation since 1865, a long lineage that has allowed them to develop a deep understanding of Beaujolais’ finest terroirs. Under the Jacques Dépagneux label, the focus is firmly on crafting premium wines from top crus such as Morgon, with particular attention to prestigious sites like Côte du Py. Low yields, manual harvesting and stringent sorting are cornerstones of their philosophy, ensuring purity and concentration in every bottle. Over time, the domaine has earned a solid reputation among Beaujolais enthusiasts for producing classically styled wines that combine authenticity, regional typicity and a notable capacity to age.
