Description

Almaviva 2020 in magnum format (1.5 L) is a benchmark Chilean icon wine, crafted in the grand tradition of Bordeaux but deeply rooted in the terroir of the Central Valley. This vintage combines ripe Andean fruit with polished French elegance, offering a powerful yet refined red built for the cellar. Presented in magnum, it promises an even slower, more harmonious evolution—ideal for collectors and truly special occasions. The 2020 Almaviva is a classic Bordeaux-style blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Carmenère and smaller portions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. It stands out for its layered complexity, the luxurious use of French oak and its ability to balance richness with freshness. Since its inaugural vintage in 1996, Almaviva has helped define the concept of “grand vin” in Chile, proving that the Maipo/Central Valley can rival the world’s most prestigious wine regions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Almaviva 2020 shows a deep, opaque ruby to almost inky purple core with a bright, youthful rim—an immediate sign of its concentration and youth. The élevage is still evident, with generous sweet spice tones, a creamy, polished impression and a faint hint of smoke from the high-quality French oak. On the nose, expect an intense yet finely detailed bouquet: layers of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum interwoven with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf and graphite. Sweet baking spices (clove, vanilla, nutmeg) mingle with hints of cocoa, incense and a subtle balsamic character. A touch of Carmenère brings a lifted herbal freshness—think bay leaf, dried thyme and a whisper of green pepper—adding dimension without masking the ripe fruit. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, with a velvety, almost creamy mouthfeel supported by dense but ultra-fine tannins. Dark berry fruit is at the core—cassis, blackberry and black cherry—framed by savoury notes of cigar box, espresso, dark chocolate and a gentle smokiness. The wine is powerful yet controlled, with vibrant acidity keeping everything in balance and leading into a long, dry and serious finish marked by spice, balsamic nuances and a lingering mineral edge. In magnum, the 2020 vintage has excellent aging potential. While already impressive with aeration, it will greatly reward patience; expect a prime drinking window from around 2027 onward, with the capacity to develop gracefully for 15–20+ years in this larger format, gaining complexity, truffle, leather and more tertiary notes over time.

Production
Almaviva is sourced primarily from high-quality vineyards in Chile’s Central Valley, with a strong focus on the Maipo area, where the combination of warm days, cool nights and well-drained gravelly and clay-limestone soils favours Bordeaux varieties. The proximity to the Andes provides a vital diurnal temperature range, preserving acidity and aromatic complexity in the grapes, while the generally dry climate allows for healthy, even ripening. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, ensuring only the best berries make it into the final blend. In the winery, the fruit is fully destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to capture purity and precision of fruit, with macerations tailored to each variety and parcel to extract fine tannins rather than hardness. The resulting wine is then matured in French oak barrels—predominantly new—for an extended period (typically around 18 months), during which bâtonnage and careful racking help integrate the oak, build texture and refine the wine’s naturally powerful structure before bottling in both standard and magnum formats.

Food & Serving
Almaviva 2020 in magnum is a natural partner for rich, protein-driven dishes and refined, classic cuisine. Think dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, slow-braised beef short ribs, lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic, venison with dark berry jus or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also complements truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragouts, hard and semi-hard cheeses like Comté, aged Manchego or Pecorino, and sophisticated dishes with earthy or smoky elements. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given the youth and structure of the 2020 vintage, decanting is highly recommended: 2–3 hours in a wide-based decanter will help the wine open and soften the tannins, especially in magnum format. As the wine matures, you can shorten the decanting time, but even with age, a brief aeration will help reveal its full aromatic and textural complexity.

Producer
Almaviva is the result of a landmark partnership formed in the mid-1990s between Baron Philippe de Rothschild (of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux) and Chilean wine giant Viña Concha y Toro. The vision was ambitious yet clear: to create a Chilean “grand vin” that would combine Bordeaux savoir-faire with one of South America’s most promising terroirs. From its first vintage in 1996, Almaviva has been bottled as a single estate wine, much like a classified growth in Bordeaux, and has consistently garnered international acclaim. Located in Chile’s Central Valley, Almaviva quickly became a reference point for premium Chilean reds, helping elevate the country’s global reputation and demonstrating the potential of Maipo/Central Valley Cabernet-based blends. Its wines regularly receive top scores from leading critics and are fixtures on the lists of fine-dining restaurants and serious collectors worldwide. Today, Almaviva stands as one of Chile’s most iconic and sought-after wines, admired for its ability to marry New World ripeness with Old World structure, finesse and age-worthiness.
