Description

Almaviva 2020 in its rare 6L Imperial format is a commanding, cellar-worthy Chilean red that brings Bordeaux Grand Vin pedigree to the foothills of the Andes. A collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Viña Concha y Toro, this wine has become one of South America’s benchmark icons. The 2020 vintage continues the house style of depth, polish, and age-worthiness, with a luxurious texture and complex layering of fruit, spice, and subtle smoke.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Almaviva 2020 shows a deep, opaque ruby color with violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and youth. The élevage is still evident, with generous notes of sweet baking spices and a creamy, well-integrated oak profile sitting alongside a faint touch of smoke. The nose opens with ripe blackcurrants, black cherries, and plum compote, followed by nuances of cedar, graphite, roasted coffee, and dark chocolate. Carmenère adds a lifted herbal freshness—think bay leaf, dried thyme, and a whisper of green pepper—together with balsamic overtones and a hint of camphor. On the palate, it is full-bodied and broad, with saturated yet polished tannins and a velvety texture. Layers of cassis, blackberry, and ripe blue fruits are woven with savory spice, tobacco, and a subtle earthy-mineral edge. The finish is dry, serious, and very long, with persistent spice and balsamic notes that promise further complexity with time. This Imperial is structured for long aging, comfortably developing over 15–20+ years, with the large format ensuring an even slower, more graceful evolution.

Production
Almaviva is sourced primarily from the Puente Alto area in Chile’s Central Valley, where gravelly, alluvial soils and cool Andean breezes create an ideal terroir for Cabernet-based blends. The climate is warm and dry, but moderated by altitude and diurnal shifts, helping preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. Grapes are picked by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness to ensure both concentration and balance. After careful sorting, the destemmed berries are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, allowing for precise extraction of color and tannin. The blend—dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with significant Carmenère and smaller portions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot—is then aged in French oak barrels, the majority new, for around 18 months, lending the wine its refined tannins, creamy texture, and complex spice profile.

Food & Serving
Almaviva 2020 is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as roasted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, venison, braised beef short ribs, or slow-cooked stews. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda, or Parmigiano Reggiano, as well as dishes featuring wild mushrooms or truffle. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity. In this 6L Imperial format, decant generously—at least 2–3 hours before serving—to allow the wine’s layered bouquet and silken texture to fully unfurl.

Producer
Created in 1997 as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild (of Château Mouton Rothschild) and Chile’s Viña Concha y Toro, Almaviva was conceived from the outset as a world-class, Bordeaux-style Grand Vin from Chile. Planted in the esteemed Puente Alto subregion, the estate quickly rose to the top tier of South American wine, consistently earning high international scores and recognition. Almaviva is now regarded as one of Chile’s flagship wines, demonstrating the country’s capacity for producing refined, age-worthy reds that rival the great wines of Bordeaux while retaining a distinct Chilean identity.
