Description
Almaviva 2020 is one of Chile’s flagship reds, a refined, Bordeaux-inspired blend crafted in partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Viña Concha y Toro. Sourced from high-quality vineyards in the Central Valley, this vintage marries New World ripeness with Old World elegance and structure. Since its inaugural release in the late 1990s, Almaviva has helped define Chile’s potential for truly world-class, ageworthy red wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Almaviva 2020 presents a deep, opaque ruby color with violet reflections hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose is layered and complex, typically offering blackcurrant and ripe blackberry alongside notes of plum, cassis, and dark cherry, lifted by subtle green and herbal tones from Carmenère—think graphite, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and a delicate touch of spice and cedar from French oak.
On the palate, this is full-bodied yet impeccably polished, with a core of dark, ripe fruit wrapped in fine-grained, velvety tannins. Expect flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry, and blueberry intertwined with cocoa, espresso, pencil shavings, and sweet baking spices, evolving towards hints of balsamic, camphor, and a savory, almost umami edge. The acidity is fresh and well-judged, supporting a long, persistent finish that is both powerful and refined. In a balanced vintage like 2020, Almaviva has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed in its youth for its richness and texture but will reward 10–20 years of cellaring, gaining complexity, tertiary notes, and even greater harmony over time.
Production
Almaviva is sourced from vineyards in Chile’s renowned Central Valley, with a strong focus on the high-altitude, gravelly soils and alluvial terraces that echo the great terroirs of Bordeaux. Warm, sunny days are tempered by cool nights and Andean breezes, helping the grapes ripen fully while preserving acidity and aromatic freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous selection in both vineyard and cellar to ensure only the finest fruit makes it into the final blend. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with each variety—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère, supported by small proportions of other Bordeaux grapes—fermented separately to capture its individual character. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, predominantly new, for around 18 months, allowing the components to integrate and the structure to soften while layering in subtle notes of toast, spice, and cedar.
Food & Serving
Almaviva 2020 is a natural partner for richly flavored, refined dishes. It shines with dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with herbs, beef short ribs, or game such as venison, as well as slow-braised dishes and deeply flavored stews. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, mushroom ragù, and mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance; avoid serving too warm, which can emphasize the alcohol. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open, soften the tannins, and reveal its full aromatic spectrum, while older bottles may require a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Almaviva is the result of a landmark collaboration launched in 1997 between two wine powerhouses: Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Bordeaux (producers of Château Mouton Rothschild) and Chile’s leading estate, Viña Concha y Toro. The project was conceived to create an icon wine from Chile that could stand alongside the world’s finest, combining French savoir-faire with the exceptional terroir of the Central Valley. The estate quickly became a benchmark for Chilean Bordeaux-style blends, consistently earning top scores from international critics and helping to elevate Chile’s reputation on the global fine wine stage. Almaviva’s meticulous vineyard management, low yields, and focus on elegance and ageability have secured its place as one of the most sought-after and collectible wines from South America.
