Description

Almaviva 2019 in magnum (1.5 L) is a benchmark Chilean red that brings together Bordeaux heritage and top-class Central Valley terroir in a grand, cellar‑worthy format. This vintage is powerful yet impeccably polished, with a velvety texture and a long, serious finish that will appeal to collectors and lovers of structured, ageworthy reds. The wine is a sophisticated blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère, reflecting both Chile’s historic Bordeaux connection and its own distinctive identity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Almaviva shows a deep, opaque ruby color with a youthful purple rim, hinting at its concentration and long life ahead. The nose is intense and layered: ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and blackberry are lifted by balsamic notes, camphor, and a subtle menthol-like freshness. With air, more complexity emerges—cedar, graphite, dark chocolate, exotic spices and a gentle herbal lift from the Carmenère. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and rounded, with a luxurious, silky and almost velvety texture. The tannins are abundant yet finely grained, feeling saturated and ripe rather than harsh. Flavors of black fruits, plum and cassis are framed by savory spice, tobacco, cocoa and a distinct balsamic character. There is a long, persistent and flavorful finish that remains dry, serious and precise, balanced by fresh acidity and that characteristic herbal, gently peppery note from Carmenère. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential; it should evolve beautifully for 15–20+ years from vintage, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances of leather, truffle and cigar box.

Production
Almaviva is sourced from a high-quality vineyard site in Chile’s Central Valley, benefiting from a combination of warm, sunny days, cool nights and the influence of the nearby Andes, which help preserve freshness and structure in the grapes. The blend in 2019 is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carmenère (from the renowned Peumo area), 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot, with Carmenère playing a key role in adding aromatic lift and herbal freshness in this moderately warm, dry year. Grapes are carefully harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then fully destemmed before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to ensure purity of fruit and precise extraction. The wine is subsequently aged for about 18 months in French oak barrels, around 75% of which are new, adding structure, fine tannins and subtle notes of toast, vanilla and spice without overwhelming the fruit. Bottling took place in January 2021, with meticulous attention to preserving the wine’s concentration, finesse and long-term stability—especially important in large-format magnums.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Almaviva magnum is a natural match for rich, savory dishes and fine cuts of meat. Think grilled or roasted lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, braised beef short ribs, venison, or slow-cooked oxtail; it also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle-infused dishes and mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Manchego. The wine shows best at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In magnum format and given the wine’s youth and structure, decanting is highly recommended—give it 1.5 to 3 hours before serving to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to fully soften. If enjoyed later in its evolution, a shorter decant of around an hour will be sufficient to let its more complex, tertiary aromas unfold.

Producer
Almaviva is a prestigious joint venture founded in 1997 between Baron Philippe de Rothschild (of Château Mouton Rothschild fame) and Chile’s Concha y Toro, created with the clear ambition of crafting a Chilean “grand vin” to rival the world’s finest Bordeaux. The project helped put Chile’s premium red wine potential firmly on the global map by combining French know-how with exceptional Chilean terroir in the Central Valley. Almaviva has since become one of the country’s most acclaimed wines, consistently receiving top international scores and recognition for its elegance, depth and aging capacity. Its success has elevated the reputation of Chilean Cabernet- and Carmenère-based blends and cemented Almaviva’s status as a modern icon in the region.
