Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve is the flagship wine of Viña Errázuriz, named after the winery’s founder, who established the estate in Aconcagua Valley in 1870. The 2021 vintage is a refined Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, combining dark-fruited depth with the freshness, precision and polished tannins of a comparatively cool growing season.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays an intense purple colour with violet highlights. Its aromatic profile opens with blueberries, fresh strawberries and blackberries, followed by nuances of nutmeg, caramel and subtle vanilla. With time in the glass, notes of black cherry, dark chocolate, tobacco, rosemary and liquorice emerge. On the palate, the 2021 Don Maximiano is broad, deep and remarkably precise. Ripe dark fruit is supported by silky, polished tannins and lively natural acidity, while well-integrated oak contributes hints of spice, cocoa and tobacco without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long and focused, with layers of dark berries, herbs, minerals and delicate spice. Although already impressive with aeration, its structure and balance give it excellent ageing potential.

Production
The grapes come from the inland part of Aconcagua Valley, between the Coastal Range and the Andes, where long, dry growing seasons, warm days and cool evening breezes help preserve freshness and definition. The MAX vineyards include varied soils, from weathered diorite and sandy clay to deep alluvial deposits and stony, well-drained terraces near the Aconcagua River. The 2021 blend comprises 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Malbec, 8% Carmenère and 7% Petit Verdot. It matured for 22 months in French oak barriques, 70% of them new. A relatively cool, extended season allowed the grapes to reach physiological ripeness at moderate alcohol levels, resulting in concentrated colour, fresh acidity and refined tannins.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C to highlight the wine’s fruit, spice and elegant tannin structure. In its youth, decant for approximately one to two hours before serving. Its richness and depth make it an excellent match for beef tenderloin, braised beef cheeks, rack of lamb and game. It also pairs beautifully with duck breast, mushroom dishes, truffle sauce and mature hard cheeses.
