2019 Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve is Viña Errázuriz’s flagship red from Chile’s Aconcagua Valley, offering a refined expression of Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Malbec, Carmenère and Petit Verdot. Named after the winery’s founder, Don Maximiano Errázuriz, it combines the concentration of a warm, dry vintage with the balance and freshness that have made Aconcagua one of Chile’s most respected red-wine regions.

Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep, richly coloured appearance. Its expressive bouquet brings together ripe cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry with dark chocolate, cedar, subtle dill and delicate herbal notes. With time in the glass, aromas of rosemary, graphite, tobacco and cool mineral spice become increasingly pronounced. On the palate, the 2019 is broad, juicy and deeply flavoured, with layers of dark fruit, chocolate and finely integrated oak. Fine-grained tannins provide impressive structure without harshness, while a clear line of acidity keeps the ripe fruit fresh and precise. The finish is long and elegant, marked by dark berries, cedar and mineral freshness. Concentration, balance and polished tannins give the wine excellent potential for further bottle ageing, while careful decanting will make it approachable now.

Production
The grapes come from the MAX vineyards in the Aconcagua Valley, including old parcels on north- and northeast-facing slopes. The soils range from weathered diorite and coarse alluvial deposits to deep, stony clay and clay-loam, while dry summers, warm days and cool evening breezes from the Pacific encourage slow, even ripening. The blend consists of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 10% Carmenère and 3% Petit Verdot. Each variety contributes a distinct element: Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and cassis, Malbec adds juicy fullness and floral character, Carmenère brings spicy depth, and Petit Verdot enhances colour and tension. The wine was matured for 22 months in French barriques, 75% of which were new, imparting integrated notes of cedar, dark chocolate and fine toast.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for beef tenderloin, côte de boeuf, rack of lamb and braised game, this full-bodied red also works beautifully with duck breast, truffles, porcini mushrooms, roasted root vegetables and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decant gently for one to two hours to encourage the aromas to open; older bottles should be decanted carefully to separate the wine from any sediment.
