Description

Zitta Wines 1864 Greenock GSM 2013 is a richly expressive Barossa Valley blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Shiraz, crafted in a distinctly old-world style. Sourced from one of Australia’s most revered wine regions, it brings together Barossa’s generous fruit with European-inspired structure and elegance. The wine pays tribute to the Greenock sub-region’s long viticultural heritage, with a style that feels both classic and contemporary in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 1864 Greenock GSM shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at its decade-plus of maturity. The nose is inviting and layered, with notes of ripe blackberries, raspberry compote and dark plums, lifted by hints of dried herbs, licorice, cracked pepper and subtle spice from oak. On the palate, this GSM is full-bodied yet composed, offering a supple wave of dark and red berry fruit wrapped in fine-grained tannins. Grenache brings lifted red fruit and warmth, Shiraz adds depth and richness, while Mourvèdre contributes structure, savoury tones and a gentle earthiness. Secondary characters of leather, cocoa, tobacco leaf and dried flowers may now be emerging, thanks to bottle age. Acidity is well-judged, keeping the wine vibrant rather than heavy. While already drinking beautifully, well-stored bottles should continue to evolve gracefully for several more years, developing further complexity and softness.

Production
The 1864 Greenock GSM is rooted in the warm, sun-drenched terroir of Barossa Valley, where gravelly and clay-based soils encourage low yields and concentrated fruit character. Zitta Wines follows an old-world mindset in the vineyard, focusing on careful canopy management and selective hand harvesting to ensure only optimally ripe, healthy bunches make it to the winery. In keeping with traditional European practices, the grapes are fermented gently to preserve aromatics and texture, followed by maturation in carefully chosen oak to add structure and spice without overwhelming the natural personality of the fruit. The result is a wine that showcases Barossa’s power through a refined, classic lens.

Food & Serving
This 2013 GSM is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside rich, savoury dishes such as slow-cooked lamb shanks, herb-crusted roast lamb, grilled ribeye, venison, or hearty stews with root vegetables. Mediterranean-inspired plates like roasted eggplant, ratatouille, or sausages with fennel and olives also complement its spicy, savoury nuances. Serve at 16–18°C, slightly cooler than room temperature, to emphasise freshness and balance. A short decant of 30–60 minutes helps the wine open up, softening the tannins and allowing its aromatic complexity to fully express itself.

Producer
Zitta Wines was founded by Angelo de Fazio, who comes from a long line of Southern Italian vignerons and brought his family’s old-world sensibilities to Barossa Valley when he purchased the estate in 2004. He named it “Zitta,” the Italian word for peace and quiet, reflecting both the tranquillity of the vineyards and his deliberate, thoughtful approach to winemaking. Situated in one of Australia’s most important and historically significant wine regions, Zitta focuses on Rhône red varieties and classic styles, as well as the near-obligatory Australian Chardonnay, crafted with a distinctly European influence. This philosophy has earned the winery a reputation for producing wines that combine Barossa’s hallmark richness with balance, structure and a clear sense of place.
