Description

Winderlea Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2019 captures the elegance and purity that have made Oregon a modern Pinot Noir powerhouse. Sourced from the red-volcanic slopes of the Dundee Hills, this is a refined, site-driven wine that balances New World clarity with Old World finesse. Often compared to top Burgundian crus, it showcases why this small corner of the Willamette Valley has become one of the most coveted addresses for Pinot Noir in the USA.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Winderlea Dundee Hills Pinot Noir shows a translucent ruby hue with garnet highlights, typical of finely structured, cool-climate Pinot Noir. The nose is vibrant and expressive, offering layers of wild raspberry, red cherry and cranberry, woven with notes of rose petal, dried orange peel, forest floor, and a subtle hint of sweet baking spice from well-judged oak. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky and precise, with a core of red berry fruit framed by lively acidity and ultra-fine tannins. Flavors of cherry, pomegranate and raspberry coulis are lifted by undertones of black tea, clove, and a touch of minerality that reflects its volcanic origins. The finish is long, graceful and mouthwatering, suggesting excellent balance rather than sheer power. Enjoyable now with a brief decant, it has the structure and freshness to evolve beautifully over the next 7–10 years, gaining complexity and more savory nuance with time in bottle.

Production
The Dundee Hills AVA is famed for its iron-rich, red Jory volcanic soils and gentle south-facing slopes, which provide excellent drainage and moderate vigor—ideal for nuanced, aromatically complex Pinot Noir. Cooled by marine influences funneled through the Coast Range and protected by the Cascades to the east, the vineyards benefit from warm days, cool nights and a long, even growing season. Winderlea typically farms its sites sustainably and often organically, with careful canopy management and hand-harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous fruit selection. In the cellar, the grapes are traditionally destemmed or partly whole-cluster fermented with native yeasts, then gently pressed and aged in French oak barrels—largely used or lightly toasted—so that the oak frames rather than dominates the wine, allowing the Dundee Hills character and Pinot purity to take center stage.

Food & Serving
This Dundee Hills Pinot Noir is exceptionally food-friendly, pairing effortlessly with dishes that echo its elegance and brightness. Think herb-roasted chicken, duck breast with cherry or berry glaze, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto, or pork tenderloin with sage and root vegetables. It also works beautifully with charcuterie, mild to medium cheeses (such as Comté, Gruyère or a soft-rind goat cheese) and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or truffle. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatics and finesse. A light decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more floral and spice notes without softening its refreshing structure.

Producer
Winderlea is a boutique, quality-driven producer based in the Dundee Hills of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, a region that has rapidly risen from experimental beginnings just a few decades ago to global acclaim.
