Description
Winderlea Bounteous Pinot Noir 2021 captures the finesse and energy that have made Oregon one of the world’s most exciting regions for cool-climate Pinot. Crafted in small quantities from meticulously farmed vineyards, this wine balances purity of fruit with a refined, Burgundian sensibility. It’s a polished, terroir-driven Pinot Noir that showcases why Oregon has become a benchmark for the grape in the New World.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Bounteous Pinot Noir shows a vibrant, translucent ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is expressive and lifted, offering notes of red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, layered with hints of rose petal, forest floor, baking spice and a subtle touch of cedar and dried herbs.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and finely textured, with silky tannins and bright, well-integrated acidity. Flavours of juicy red berries and pomegranate are supported by nuances of cranberry, tea leaf, spice and a faint minerality that carries through the finish. The balance of fruit, structure and freshness suggests it will drink beautifully on release and continue to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and more savoury depth with time in bottle.
Production
Winderlea sources fruit from prime, cool-climate sites in Oregon, a state whose wine country lies roughly 60 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, protected between the forested Coast Range to the west and the volcanic Cascades to the east. This unique terroir offers moderate temperatures, cooling breezes and a long growing season—ideal conditions for Pinot Noir to ripen slowly and develop layered aromatics without excessive alcohol. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve delicate skins and natural acidity. In the cellar, Winderlea favours gentle, minimalist winemaking: careful sorting, a combination of whole-berry and destemmed fermentations, and a controlled maceration to extract fine tannins rather than heaviness. The wine is then matured in a selection of French oak barrels, a portion of which is new, to add subtle spice and texture while allowing the purity of Oregon Pinot Noir and its cool-climate elegance to remain front and centre.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir’s balance of bright fruit and savoury complexity makes it a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken, herb-crusted pork loin, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto, duck breast and dishes featuring earthy ingredients like lentils, beets and root vegetables. Try it alongside soft-rind cheeses such as Brie or Camembert, or mild goat cheese, to highlight its nuanced aromatics. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) for optimal expression; a light chill can enhance freshness. Decanting for 30–45 minutes before serving will help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more floral and spicy layers.
Producer
Winderlea is a quality-focused, boutique producer based in Oregon, a region that has transformed from an experimental frontier just 50 years ago into a global reference point for top-tier Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Inspired by the great wines of Burgundy, Winderlea was founded with a commitment to crafting elegant, site-driven wines and to farming with respect for the environment. Oregon’s wine country—often compared to Burgundy for its climate and soils—has become a magnet for small, family-run wineries like Winderlea that champion sustainable and, in many cases, organic or biodynamic practices. Within this landscape, Winderlea has earned a reputation for precision, balance and a transparent expression of terroir, helping to cement Oregon’s status among serious wine collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
