Description
From one of Mosel’s most meticulous boutique producers comes Weiser-Künstler Riesling Enkircher Ellergrub Spätlese Bio 2023 – a finely etched, fruit-sweet Riesling from one of Enkirch’s steepest and most storied sites. This organic Spätlese captures the classic Mosel balance of bright acidity, ripe stone fruit and slate-driven minerality in a style that is both hedonistic and precise. Rooted in the historic tradition of late-harvest Riesling, it shows just how thrillingly complex modern Mosel Spätlese can be.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a pale lemon to light straw color with green reflections, hinting at both its youth and freshness. Slow-forming legs suggest a gentle richness from the natural grape sweetness.
On the nose, expect an expressive bouquet of white peach, ripe pear, yellow plum and juicy apricot, woven together with notes of lime zest, blossom honey and candied citrus. Subtle tones of wet slate, crushed rock and a faint herbal lift (think lemon balm and chamomile) underline the fruit and speak clearly of the Ellergrub terroir.
The palate is filigreed and precise: a mouthwatering line of acidity cuts through the natural sweetness, giving the wine a shimmering, almost crystalline feel. Flavors of stone fruit, Meyer lemon, green apple and quince jelly interplay with hints of white flowers, smoky slate and a whisper of botrytis spice. The sweetness is present but never cloying; instead, it is carried along by the Mosel’s hallmark finesse, finishing long, salty and delicately honeyed.
Thanks to its vibrant acidity and concentration, this Spätlese has excellent aging potential. Over 10–20 years, it should gain even more complexity, with tertiary notes of dried apricot, candied citrus peel, herbal tea and petrol emerging, while the sweetness and acidity knit together into an even more seamless whole.
Production
Enkircher Ellergrub is one of the great steep slopes of the Middle Mosel: a dramatic, south- to south-east–facing vineyard with extremely steep inclines and poor, weathered blue slate soils. These conditions naturally restrict yields and foster deep root penetration, giving intensely mineral, finely structured wines. Weiser-Künstler farms the site organically (Bio), working by hand on the precipitous terraces where machinery is virtually impossible, and harvesting is done by selective hand-picking over multiple passes to ensure that only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes – and, where desired, a fine proportion of noble rot (Botrytis) – make it into the Spätlese. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented slowly with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel or traditional Mosel fuder, with fermentation stopped at the point where fruit, sweetness and acidity are in ideal balance. The wine then rests on its fine lees to gain texture and aromatic complexity before being bottled with minimal intervention, preserving the purity of site and grape.
Food & Serving
This Spätlese is wonderfully versatile at the table. Its vivid acidity and gentle sweetness make it a superb partner for spicy Asian cuisine (Thai curries, Szechuan dishes, Korean fried chicken), aromatic dishes with ginger, chili and lemongrass, or rich, salty foods like blue cheese, aged Gouda and washed-rind cheeses. It also shines with lighter desserts based on stone fruit, citrus or apple, and works beautifully as an aperitif on its own. Serve well chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F). Young bottles benefit from 15–30 minutes in the glass rather than full decanting, allowing the aromatics to open gradually; with mature bottles, a gentle, brief decant can help separate any sediment and reveal the wine’s full complexity.
Producer
Weingut Weiser-Künstler is a small, highly regarded estate based in Traben-Trarbach on the Mosel, founded and run by the husband-and-wife team of Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler. Since establishing the winery in the early 2000s, they have focused on reviving old, steep-slope vineyards in and around Enkirch, working organically and largely by hand to express the finest nuances of each site. Their meticulous, low-intervention approach in both vineyard and cellar has earned them a reputation among Riesling enthusiasts as one of the most exciting artisanal producers in the Mosel, particularly for their finely balanced, fruit-sweet Kabinett and Spätlese wines. Today, Weiser-Künstler is seen as a reference point for purity, precision and terroir expression in the region, with micro-cuvées from top sites like Ellergrub avidly sought after by collectors and sommeliers alike.
