Description
Weingut Zähringer Chardonnay Altenberg Grande Réserve 2024 is a refined single-vineyard Chardonnay from Baden that combines ripe fruit, chalky mineral drive, and a distinctly elegant, almost Burgundian profile. Made in small quantities from carefully selected parcels, it reflects both the character of the Laufener Altenberg site and Zähringer’s long commitment to biodynamic, terroir-driven winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale golden color and an inviting, layered bouquet of citrus, ripe pear, apple, quince, and white flowers. Subtle notes of toasted almonds, vanilla, and a touch of smoke add depth and complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
The palate is full yet beautifully balanced, with lively acidity, a creamy texture, and a pronounced mineral tension that carries through to a long, elegant finish. The 2024 vintage has excellent freshness and structure, giving the wine both immediate appeal and the potential to age gracefully over the next several years.
Production
The grapes come from the single vineyard Laufener Altenberg in Baden, where chalk-rich soils and a high-altitude setting near the Black Forest create ideal conditions for Chardonnay. The cooler site helps preserve freshness and precision, while the limestone soils contribute the wine’s marked mineral signature.
At the winery, Zähringer works with minimal intervention to let the terroir speak clearly. The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation and is matured in oak barrels, adding texture, depth, and subtle spice while keeping the Chardonnay’s natural vibrancy at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent partner for roast chicken, veal, lobster, creamy seafood dishes, risotto with mushrooms, or fine poultry dishes with a light butter sauce. Serve it at around 10–12°C to show its aromatic complexity and structure; a short decant of 20–30 minutes can be helpful if opened young, especially to allow the oak and mineral notes to open up.
Producer
Weingut Zähringer is a family-run estate in Heitersheim, Baden, with origins dating back to 1844. Now led by the sixth generation, Fabian Zähringer, the winery has built a strong reputation for elegant, precise wines shaped by sustainable farming and a clear sense of place.
The family converted to organic viticulture in 1987 and has been Demeter-certified biodynamic since 2010, placing Zähringer among the pioneers of environmentally conscious winemaking in Germany. Today, the estate is especially respected for its Chardonnay and Spätburgunder, which are known for their finesse, freshness, and refined mineral expression.
