Description
Weingut Prager’s Ried Achleiten Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 2024 comes from one of the Wachau’s most revered sites, a steep, stone-strewn vineyard rising above the Danube. With its historic reputation dating back to the 13th century and Prager’s precise, pedigree-driven winemaking, this is a wine that combines site expression, concentration and remarkable finesse.
Tasting Notes
Expect a bright, pale straw colour with green reflections and the tense, mineral look typical of a top Wachau site. On the nose, it is likely to show Grüner Veltliner’s classic notes of white pepper, citrus, green herbs and ripe orchard fruit, layered with smoky stone and wet rock nuances from Achleiten’s stony soils.
The palate should be focused and structured, with ripe pear, yellow apple, citrus zest and a fine peppery spice balanced by a vibrant, saline mineral core. As a Smaragd bottling, it will have more depth and power than lighter styles, yet Prager’s touch should keep it precise and elegant. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, gaining complexity, texture and savoury nuance over time.
Production
Ried Achleiten is a steep, terraced vineyard in the Wachau with dramatic exposure along the Danube and a highly varied geological makeup across its roughly 22 hectares. The soils are stony, deeply mineral and complex, contributing to the vineyard’s distinctive character and to the differences seen between individual parcels. Grapes are harvested by hand from these demanding slopes, and the wine is vinified with the goal of preserving purity, structure and clear site expression.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for refined dishes such as roast chicken, veal, pork loin, river fish, shellfish and vegetables with herbs or a touch of spice. It also works beautifully with Asian-inspired cuisine, creamy sauces and hard cheeses. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting if opening it young to let the aromatics and mineral detail fully unfold.
Producer
Weingut Prager is one of the Wachau’s most respected estates, known for producing terroir-driven wines of precision, elegance and longevity. The winery has helped define the region’s reputation for world-class Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, with a particular focus on classic sites and careful vineyard work. Its wines are consistently regarded among the benchmark expressions of the Wachau, and Achleiten is one of the key vineyards in that story.
