Description
Weingut Prager’s Achleiten Stockkultur Smaragd 2024 comes from one of Wachau’s most celebrated sites, where an exceptional parcel of very old, ungrafted-style bush vines delivers remarkable concentration and character. Produced from Grüner Veltliner in the heart of Achleiten, this is a wine that combines the power of low yields with the finesse and structure that have made Prager one of the region’s benchmark names.
Tasting Notes
Expect a wine with a bright, polished appearance and impressive depth. On the nose, the old-vine fruit typically leans toward ripe orchard fruit, citrus zest, white pepper, and a subtle stony, herbal complexity that reflects the Achleiten vineyard.
On the palate, it should feel dense yet precise, with layered fruit, savoury spice, and a firm, well-defined structure. The small berries from these ancient vines contribute to pronounced concentration and a serious mineral backbone, giving the wine excellent balance and the potential to age beautifully for many years.
Production
The Stockkultur parcel sits within Achleiten, one of Wachau’s steep and highly prized vineyard sites, where the rocky soils and exceptional exposure help create wines of great tension and definition. The vines are more than 80 years old and trained in traditional bush form, which naturally limits yields and intensifies flavour.
Harvested selectively and vinified with care to preserve purity and structure, the wine reflects the precision for which Prager is known. The combination of old vines, tiny berries, and the terroir of Achleiten results in a wine of notable depth, concentration, and longevity.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for refined dishes such as roasted poultry, veal, monkfish, crab, or asparagus with beurre blanc, as well as richly textured vegetarian cuisine. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C to show its aromatics and structure at their best. Decanting is not essential, but a short period in a carafe can help the wine open up if enjoyed young.
Producer
Weingut Prager is one of the most respected producers in the Wachau, long regarded for its precise, terroir-driven white wines. The estate has built a strong reputation for producing some of the region’s most expressive Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings, with a particular mastery of site-specific bottlings from top vineyard locations.
Prager’s wines are widely admired for their clarity, structure, and aging potential, making the winery a key reference point for quality in Austria. Its Achleiten wines, especially from special old-vine parcels like Stockkultur, are among the producer’s most sought-after and admired releases.
