Description
Weingut Knipser Spätburgunder Kalkmergel 2019 is a finely crafted German Pinot Noir from the limestone-rich soils of Laumersheim in the Pfalz. This cuvée brings together top Spätburgunder parcels to deliver a wine that is both charmingly approachable and quietly sophisticated. Long experience with barrique at Knipser ensures subtle, well-judged oak that enhances rather than overshadows the vibrant fruit.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Kalkmergel shows a bright ruby to medium garnet hue, typical of elegant Pinot Noir from cooler sites. The nose is expressive and layered: sour cherries and wild raspberries mingle with ripe plum, a hint of vanilla, smoky bacon, sweet paprika and an array of fine spices. There’s also a subtle herbal note reminiscent of lovage and preserved fruit that adds complexity without becoming heavy.
On the palate, this Spätburgunder is juicy and rounded, with soft, polished tannins and a gentle, well-integrated acidity. Red berry fruit is supported by a touch of residual sweetness that gives the wine a smooth, almost velvety mouthfeel, while delicate spice and a whisper of oak linger on the finish. Enjoyable in its youth for its generosity and charm, it has the structure to develop additional nuance over the next 5–7 years, gaining more tertiary, savoury notes with careful cellaring.
Production
The Spätburgunder Kalkmergel 2019 is sourced mainly from premium vineyard sites around Laumersheim in the Pfalz, where limestone-rich (Kalkmergel) soils and a relatively warm, dry climate encourage full phenolic ripeness while preserving freshness. Grapes are selectively harvested at Spätlese-level ripeness to capture both intensity and finesse. In the cellar, the fruit is traditionally fermented, with careful extraction to emphasise elegance over power, and then matured in small oak barrels (barriques). As one of the pioneers of barrique use in Germany, Knipser employs their decades of experience to balance fine tannin structure and gentle spice with the natural purity of Spätburgunder.
Food & Serving
This is a highly versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with roast poultry (especially duck), veal, pork tenderloin, or dishes featuring mushrooms and root vegetables. It also complements mildly spiced charcuterie, soft to semi-hard cheeses, and classic German cuisine such as Schweinebraten or braised beef. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic precision and silky texture. A short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up its more savoury and spicy nuances, especially in its youth.
