Description

A powerful yet finely balanced Spätburgunder from the Sonnenberg vineyard, this 2021 Großes Gewächs combines concentrated red-fruit character with mineral freshness and a confident, structured finish. “KT” refers to the French-side name of the vineyard, Kostert, which cannot be printed on the label for wine-law reasons.

Tasting Notes
Ruby in appearance, it opens with aromas of cherry and red berries, followed by floral and subtly herbal notes, juniper, smoke and a hint of bacon. The palate is juicy and concentrated, with peppery spice, a gentle bitter edge and noticeable but well-integrated oak. Fine-grained tannins remain youthful, while a harmonious mineral acidity carries the ripe fruit into a long finish. Already approachable and beautifully balanced, this full-bodied Pinot Noir should gain further finesse and elegance with time in bottle.

Production
Sonnenberg extends across the German-French border; on the French side, the vineyard is known as Kostert. Its soils are predominantly clay, marl and limestone. The grapes are selectively hand-harvested, destemmed and spontaneously fermented, with the skins regularly submerged in the must to encourage greater extraction. The wine matures for 18 months in a combination of new and used barriques and is bottled unfiltered.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 15–17°C with roast duck, game birds, grilled pork or mushroom dishes. Its concentration and fine tannins also make it a good match for gently seasoned lamb. A short decant can help open the wine while it is young; handle it gently and taste as it develops.
