Description
Weingut Heiligenblut Riesling Weinheimer Melaphyr 2022 is a distinctive dry Riesling shaped by the volcanic melaphyr soils of Weinheim in Rheinhessen. This is one of the more composed and less “wild” expressions from the Hannemann brothers, offering precision, clarity and energy without sacrificing juiciness or power. The unique melaphyr rock formation, of volcanic origin, has long been prized here for producing structured, mineral-driven wines, and this cuvée is a pure and focused tribute to that terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Weinheimer Melaphyr shows a bright, pale lemon hue with green reflections, underlining its youthful vibrancy. The nose is strikingly fresh and detailed, opening with an array of citrus notes – lemon, lime and juicy mandarin – wrapped in fine herbal nuances of mint and lemon balm. A subtle, stony impression runs underneath, hinting at its volcanic origins.
On the palate, the wine is taut yet generous, with a pronounced, lively acidity that is beautifully balanced by a full, ripe fruit core. Citrus and stone-fruit flavors mingle with delicate phenolic grip, giving the wine shape and a refined, lightly herbal edge. The texture is both mouthwatering and structured, finishing long, clean and saline. Enjoyable now for its energy and clarity, it has the backbone to develop further over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and softer contours with some bottle age.
Production
The fruit for this Riesling comes from vineyards around Weinheim in the so‑called “rheinhessische Schweiz,” where steep, rocky sites are dominated by melaphyr, a hard volcanic rock that lends tension, spice and a cool, stony character to the wines. The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it to the cellar. After picking, the must undergoes several hours of maceration on the skins to build a fine, subtle tannin framework before pressing. Fermentation is followed by a full year of aging on the full lees, which adds depth, texture and complexity while preserving the distinctive freshness and precision that define this wine.
Food & Serving
This Riesling’s bright acidity and herbal-citrus profile make it a superb partner for delicate yet flavorful dishes. Think ceviche, sashimi, steamed white fish with herbs, grilled prawns, freshwater trout, or lightly spiced Asian cuisine such as Vietnamese summer rolls or Thai salads. It also works beautifully with goat cheese, fresh cheeses and vegetable-based dishes featuring fennel, asparagus or fresh herbs. Serve chilled at around 8–10 °C; a brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up aromatically, especially in its youth.
