Weingut Gerhard Wohlmuth’s Riesling Phyllit 2024 is a strikingly expressive white wine from the steep slopes of Kitzeck-Sausal in Styria, where altitude, slate, and quartz shape its sharp mineral profile. Floral, highly aromatic, and wonderfully concentrated, it captures both the energy of the vintage and the region’s long tradition of precise, terroir-driven Riesling.

Tasting Notes
Pale in the glass with a bright, luminous core, this Riesling opens with an enticing bouquet of wildflowers, litchi, acacia honey, candied citrus peel, and a delicate smoky note. On the palate, it is vibrant and tense, driven by electric acidity and impressive depth, with flavors of ripe apple, underripe pineapple, litchi, lime leaf, yellow blossoms, and crushed stone. The wine is both sleek and powerful, balancing purity with intensity in a way that makes it especially compelling now, while also suggesting good short- to medium-term aging potential. Over time, its mineral backbone and layered fruit should continue to evolve beautifully.

Production
The grapes come from several selected vineyards around Kitzeck, planted at 380 to 650 meters above sea level on extremely steep slopes reaching up to 80% gradient. South-west exposure and soils of red and black slate with quartz give the wine its pronounced mineral character, while the cool site conditions help preserve freshness and aromatic precision. The grapes are hand-harvested at full maturity in late October to early November, gently pressed, and spontaneously fermented in stainless steel at around 20°C before ageing for several months on the lees.

Food & Serving
This Riesling pairs beautifully with shellfish, sushi, lightly spiced Asian dishes, fresh goat’s cheese, or white fish served with citrus and herbs. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and decanting is not necessary, though a short period in the glass will help the aromas unfold further.
