Weingut Gerhard Wohlmuth’s Morillon Ried Gola 2021 is a characterful Chardonnay from Styria that combines ripe orchard fruit, fine creaminess, and a distinct mineral edge. Sourced from one of the estate’s warmest, old-vine parcels on lean slate soils, it captures both generosity and precision in a style that feels deeply terroir-driven.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, inviting profile with a polished, medium-bodied texture. Aromas of juicy yellow apple, melon, white peach, acacia blossom, grapefruit, and fresh almond unfold with plenty of lift and detail. On the palate, the wine is succulent and vibrant, with honeydew melon, pear, yellow flowers, and wet stone layered over subtle notes of almond kernel and toasted bread. The balance of ripe fruit, lively minerality, and restrained creaminess gives it real tension and finesse, and it should develop nicely over the next few years.

Production
‘Gola’ means naked, a reference to the sparse slate soils of this vineyard site. The vines are very old, and because this is one of Wohlmuth’s warmest sites, yields are low while the fruit reaches excellent ripeness and concentration. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted, then given a brief maceration before being pressed slowly and gently; fermentation takes place in a combination of stainless steel tanks and large oak casks, including one new barrel. The wine is then aged for nine months on the lees to build texture and add subtle complexity.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal, grilled fish, shellfish, creamy pasta dishes, or mushroom risotto. Serve it at 10–12°C to let the fruit and minerality shine, and consider a short decant if opening it young to give the wine a little extra air and aromatic openness.
