Description

Weingut Gerhard Wohlmuth’s Grauburgunder Kitzeck-Sausal 2021 is a serious, finely tuned Austrian Pinot Gris with impressive depth, freshness, and mineral drive. Sourced from steep, high-altitude vineyards in one of Styria’s most distinctive sites, it shows the kind of precision and character that has made Wohlmuth a reference producer in the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grauburgunder shows a polished, inviting profile with ripe fruit framed by vivid acidity and a distinctly stony edge. The nose is expressive and layered, offering Conference pear, lychee, ripe lime, crushed rock, and fresh green herbs. On the palate, it is generous and mouth-filling, yet focused, with flavors of ripe pear, grapefruit, juicy green apple, almond kernel, wet stone, and a hint of mint. The wine’s balance of ripe texture and vibrant mineral tension gives it real finesse, while the lees contact adds a subtle creaminess to the finish. It already drinks beautifully now, but its structure and freshness suggest it will continue to develop well over the next few years.

Production
The grapes come from several vineyard sites around Kitzeck, planted at 400–540 meters above sea level on steep slopes reaching up to 60% incline. With southwest exposure and soils of red slate and quartz, the vineyards provide excellent drainage and strong mineral expression. The fruit is harvested late by hand as whole clusters and carefully sorted before a gentle pressing. A skin maceration of 8–19 hours helps build aroma and flavor, followed by spontaneous fermentation in old oak barrels and seven months of lees aging, which adds texture and complexity.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for rich seafood, roast poultry, veal, mushroom dishes, or creamy risottos, as well as lightly spiced Asian cuisine. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider a brief decant if serving young to help open its aromatic layers.

Producer
Weingut Gerhard Wohlmuth is a highly respected family estate in Styria, known for crafting wines of precision, site expression, and remarkable mineral character. The winery has earned particular recognition for its steep-slope vineyards in Kitzeck-Sausal and its commitment to quality-focused, terroir-driven winemaking. As a member of STK, the estate follows strict standards that go well beyond legal requirements, reinforcing its reputation as one of the region’s leading producers.
